I'm getting one(depending on price) as mine is full (32 gig) of apps, magizines for goodreader etc and mine is a treat for exercise/walk(18 mile) each week, I was obeese and now slim and treat meself to gadgets rather than food (sins on a yo yo diet) and is no apple fanboy, I wouldn't have bought ipad if I couldn't JB it / get free games/magizines etc. I'm a fan of money in my pocket but ipad is well worth it.

love me ipad for games/apps, goodreader, forums and splashtop = being able to watch me footy stream(flash from pc) on toilet/making something to eat ;o)

If Apple have the courage, a dual boot device iOS and Android could be a winner to eliminate all the rivals, especially if it also allowed use of Adobe Flash Player.

Why would Apple want to load any device with Android?

People buy Apple products without Adobe Flash Player. I've used phones with it and it doesn't bother me.

To sell more.

It bothers some people, many of whom turn to an Android device as a result. Even more people would buy Apple products if they ran Flash.

More rumours on the iPad 2 (& also iPhone 5):

Apparently, those case and hardware mockups we've seen are rather early versions, which means we're still months out from a proper introduction. It seems likely that the device will land around April (perfectly timed with the 12-month product cycle Apple enjoys). And what about that device? From what we've been told, the thinner, sleeker tablet will sport a new screen technology that is akin to (though not the same as) the iPhone 4's Retina Display and will be "super high resolution" (unlike reports to the contrary). The device will remain at 10 inches but will now feature both front and rear cameras (not a huge surprise), and... there's an SD slot. That's right -- our sources say with near certainty that the device will have a dedicated SD slot built in (with no traditional USB slot). In fact, see that weird notch in the photo below? That's where the SD part will be located. What's most interesting, however, is what's happening under the hood.

The new iPad will feature a dual GSM / CDMA chipset produced by Qualcomm and will mark Apple's shift away from Infineon as its chipset maker to Qualcomm for all of its mobile devices. It's not clear if the chipset being used will be based on the company's EV-DO / HSPA Gobi variety or an entirely new design. Presumably, the strength of the new dual-mode chipset is that it will allow both Verizon and AT&T to offer the iPad simultaneously.

But all of these moves are leading up to the iPhone 5 -- a completely redesigned handset -- which our sources say is on track for a summer launch. Right now, the device is being tested discreetly by senior staff at Apple (strictly on campus only). We don't have much info on the phone at this point, but our understanding is that the new device will be a total rethink from a design standpoint and will be running atop Apple's new A5 CPU (a Cortex A9-based, multi-core chip). This device, like the iPad 2, will feature a Qualcomm chipset that does triple duty as the CDMA / GSM / UMTS baseband processor -- from what we hear there's no LTE in the mix at this point.

One other interesting tidbit: Apple is at work on the second generation of its redesigned Apple TV, which will include that new A5 processor. The CPU is said to be blazingly fast, cranking out 1080p video "like running water." It's likely that the A5 will make it into the iPad 2 as well, but we have yet to confirm that.”

April?!

Just in time for Aarons birthday.

I'm quite happy to wait for that.

April makes perfect sense.

As I said earlier in the thread, Apple loves annual product cycles. There is a new iPhone every Summer, there is a new iPod Touch every September... it stands to reason that the new iPad will be released in April, like the original was.

I'm also happy to wait...

I'm more interested in the iPhone 5 than iPad 2

I do like the rumour that the iPhone 5 will have a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 in it, but I think I'll wait for iPhone 6. I already have an iPhone 4, & would rather get an iPad 2 this year than an iPhone 5. I'll still have another six months left on my contract when the iPhone 5 comes out, & if I wait for that to end, I may as well wait a further 6 months after that & get the 6th gen.

I never thought about it but it actually makes sense in the same way it made sense when Apple allowed Windows to run on their computers.

It would completely derail its competitors so early on to do something like that. While it could potentially harm Apple's App sales I think they would secure their dominant share of the market for tablets by doing so.

Do you think Joe Bloggs knows the difference between Android and iOS tablets?

No.

Consumers see iPad as the tablet. They see Android as a cheaper alternative. A majority of people I know see Android as a "copycat apple thing".

People aren't going out shopping saying "hmmmm android has bla bla. Apple has bla bla.". They're looking at the devices and buying one.

Putting Android on the iPad from a consumer point of view would be nothing important whatsoever. It's not at all like Windows on Mac where people wante to switch but were afraid if losing applications they had. Android doesn't have anything like that. Hell most people don't even know what flash is. They look at adverts and buy the one that looks like it does what they want it to.

It's frightening to think that anyone spends anything up to £700 on a product without having any real knowledge of its specification. However, at the very dumbest end of the market, the one advertisers aim at, I fear you are probably correct.

I had an ipad, hated it!!

so damn sick of constant saafri reloads due to a pathetic amount of ram.

Sold it in the end, and bought the new macbook air.

Ipad 2 will still be a no go for me due to the Air but it will without a doubt have at least 512mb ram.

I'm more interested in the new iphone although if its just a minor revision im going to sell my IP4 and try android until next years revision as im bored of it now. Plus im fed up of dropping signal all the time

I don't think anybody was expecting as big a bump in the resolution than is being rumoured here.

If that's the case then I'd be worried what that means for the price of the machine and battery life - especially if they're also going to slim the iPad down for the second gen.

The SD card slot would be a complete game changer for me personally, and could potentially correct my biggest issue with the iPad - the hassle involved with transferring content to and fro. If Apple do include an SD card slot that allows for content to be moved freely without having to move through iTunes then they'll knock the wind out of a lot of competitor's sales.

The SD card slot is the one thing about Engadget's spec rumours I don't buy. I can see it having a better (but not "Retina") display, I can see it having a better CPU & GPU, plus of course things such as cameras & more RAM are surely a given... but a card slot? Why would Apple give it a card slot, when it would mean people would buy the cheaper model instead of spending another £100 on the 32GB version or £200 on the 64GB version?

Some people will buy Apple products on brand alone, the same people that think that Sky own satellite tv.

As an iPhone user, I avoided upgrading to an iphone4 because apart from the fact it has a 'prettier' screen and a slightly updated OS, there was nothing exceptional in there that would attract me to upgrade... the iPad being the same.... nothing in there was exceptional enough to justify the cost for what it was

Apple need to up their game a little, as Honeycomb has already turned a few heads....

Android is not a Copycat, or a lesser version of Apples OS, its an alternative and thats all... if one brand controlled the whole mobile platform we'd be screwed and bored.... (A bit like satellite tV here in the UK)

Apple unfortunately from my perspective, with regards to phones as such, are less tha n premium now.... the calibre of people surfing facebook in the apple store, whilst checking their iphone....sums it up

Indeed .. They know a good thing when they see it .. and thats charging top dollar to people willing to pay it.

By only enabling you to be able to transfer data to the IPad. If there is no functionality to run or watch things from the memory card and it is just there for upload purposes it is useful but then still encourages sales of higher memory models.

Keep in mid that the storage in the iPad is much faster than what you would get from an SD card. It is the primary reason why it is so expensive to jump up in size every 16gigs.

All you needed to do was use a browser with tabs like iCab or Atomic Web. All you do is set it to open links to another tab.

Oh really. Thanks for that. End result is I'm happy with the MacBook air for now anyway

Yu do realise that 10% is more than the margin the shop will be making on the iPad.

The margins non apple stores sell at would be more like 7%
