Sounds like any cheesy Euro-tart could have made it.

Apart from the old style Britney breakdown at 00.50, it's not half bad.

A strange whistlestop tour through trance, hard dance, techno and dubstep - obviously designed to give young listeners a taste of these genres when they wouldn't otherwise hear them. There'll be some killer remixes of it no doubt.

Nice change from boring old urban/r&b.

absolutely love it for that reason!!! the production, the pacing, the vocals it's just NAILED!!! its not the over autotune of BEP's Ke£ha, Gaga and whatever!!!

it's full on raw vocals and distortion that gives it it's power.

not Europop or Urban stuff it's Dub Step, Trance and House all into one huge song! and i cannot wait for the video! already #1 in 17 countries on Itunes! wish we got it earlier

i dont understand comments that say 'dated' 'generic' 'typical' etc. when no other mainstream artist the past few years has done anything quite like it.

But then again may not be everyone's cup of tea! but there's no mistaking it's a flawless piece of work that makes for an excellent trailer for what's up and coming!

Are you serious? HIAM is more autotuned than every Gaga single bar Telephone, which ironically was intended for Britney.

There's a LOT of vocal editing going on there. You're clearly deaf if you think that is 'raw'.

It's also more euro-pop with a dubstep bridge, than actual dubstep.

I don't think it's generic, but I can see why people might think that. It's the melody/hook. Very typical dance/pop. The production is the saving grace, which in America will definitely NOT be generic/typical/dated. That's her primary market so that's fine.

I like it, for the record, I just really don't think it's worthy of the praise some award it. I was expecting more from her, but it'll satisfy my needs until the second single/album.

I just wish they focused as much on the melody and chorus as they did on the production.

Yes, the beat is great, but the chorus is incredibly average! There's no escaping that. Do you Britney fans not care about big choruses and hooks, but a few decent beats and some dubstep breakdown instead?

i love the chorus, it's simple and cool and breathy.

I am glad they haven't gone overboard with HIAM, it's perfect the way it is for a lead single.

Boo! You quoted as I was editing

Anyway, I honestly don't think the chorus is anything special at all. There's no real hook, melodically it's very weak, and there's nothing to have a good sing along to, as well as the lyrics being quite lame. I've heard hundreds of better choruses last year alone.

I just think they focused so much on the beat and the dubstep breakdown, they forgot to pack a decent tune in there.

And why shouldn't they of 'gone overboard' with the song? As a pop fan I want to hear a song which grabs me and makes me want to sing along to it and go crazy. Remember when we all first heard Bad Romance? (not comparing, by the way) It was huge and barmy, but most people absolutely loved it and agreed it was one of the best pop songs in years. Apart from a decent beat and breakdown, HIAM has nothing about it anywhere near as good as any of Britney's best songs.

I really want to love the song but it just doesn't do much for me. If it wasn't Britney lead single, I doubt many people would be so excited about it.

after i first heard it i was like everyone else, but after a good few listens it actually is a fantastic song and it deserves the success it is getting in the us, so far it has had the most spins on the radio ever in the us and is no1 in 17 countries on itunes.

so after a few listens have all of your opinions changed?

fell in love with it instantly!! the first time i have so since Gimme More really! it properly hit me right on! the production, the chorus, the vocals! just BOOM! and have been repeating it a lot since!

of course people are going to write it off because they're not inclined to give it a chance! but it's their loss really.

it's a perfect lead single as it doesn't show what the ENTIRE record will be like as a conecpt but it's a beyond brilliant taster of what's to come and the video will bring more attention to the song itself!

and i find the lyrics and the emotion behind the lyrics really touching....Britney and Max Martin have done it again!!!

Great beat and breakdown, shame about the chorus and lack of any decent hooks or melody.

Must've heard it about 15 times now and still think the same.

btw i hate Bad ROmance i also hated (initially) WOmanizer because it's so repetetive.

and i am singing to Hold it Against Me everytime i play it now! and with more play etc loads of people will be.

People said it about Only Girl and wrote it off yet it got huge sales and everyone can sing it! HIAM will have the same effect for certain.

People may have said the same about Slave 4 U when it premiered....now look at it!

people cannot really write off a song until it's had it's impact really but there's plenty of awesome moments within the song! and yes lyrically it isn;t challenging! but it's old skool and also i find it breezy and beautiful not about getting drunk or clubbing, it's sentimental tongue in cheek brilliance

oh and orgasmic

The lyrics are poor and the chrous is very dull. Its not a bad beat but its no whwere near what i was expecting and its one of her worst singles.

people who are screaming about how good this is are probally obessed with britney spears to the max.

Its decent but nothing new, nothing wow or nothing i haven't heard before.

And as for being number 1 in 17 countries, all mmajor releases do that, its britney isn't it. Just becauseits number 1 doesn't make a song any better or worse.

another reason why people might not like it as much is probably because it's very different to what she has ever done and the songs that always become a success are those that grow rather than an instant like

People not liking it are either boring "Little Monsters" (gag) or they dont like the experimental sounds.

well if people see what reaction they had to Take That's recent album Progress the fan reaction was 'split' and critics were praising.

and yes that album flopped didn't it??

people aren't going to like it for a few reasons.

overhype, disappreciation of the artist themselves so not gonna listen, because theyre supporting another artist (i see Kylie and gaga fans on here for instance!) so won't grow to love it or won't admit to it, and some don't like change!

either way the song will be and is being very successful! had critically positive feedback and an overall acclaim response from fans and mainstream public and by far is my favourite lead single in years.

Not because i love Britney, but because i love music and i know when i smell something great!

i never said the song is fantastic / better because it's number 1 but it does suggest that people like it as i'm pretty sure im right when i say that people can preview the song before buying and obviously did because they like the song, i only stated it's success just to show how well it's doing so far and that britney is far from over infact she is getting bigger & better

kinda sickens me! i love it when an artist shows there versatility and goes out of their comfort zone.

hate when someone bashes a song for being different....time will tell and cannot wait for video!!!

While I would never say it was her best single, I would say it's the best post-Blackout single she has released. Gimme More and BTI, if released now, would get the same level of hype. Sadly, they were more ahead of their time, as evidenced by how that album has influenced today's "pop" sound.

Blackout really did influence and create the electropop/europop scene really! even Rolling Stone has found that without Blackout loads of artists wouldn't have gone that way with their music.

And she's doing it again and making British underground dance scene become more known stateside

and yeah i was being sarky with the meaining despite some people 'bashing' TT's work for being different it's got record sales and topped the chart for 6 weeks on end lol. and i own their album too fyi hehe and like it a lot.

Only Girl was always going to be a huge hit because of the build-up to it, the fact it's by Rihanna, and because it's a typical standard dance-pop song which was made with the charts in mind, although the chorus was quite good. Hold It Against Me will be a hit because of the build-up, the fact it's by Britney, and it's a dance-pop song, albeit with a dubstep influence. The fact it will be a hit is irrelevant. When Lady Gaga releases her new single it will obviously be massive too because of the build-up and because Gaga is huge right now. Chart success of a song matters much less to me than how good the song is.

I never wrote off Britney's new song, I'm just more bothered about the quality of the song rather than the inevitable chart success it will have. Oh and just because the lyrics aren't about clubbing or getting drunk, doesn't automatically mean they are good. They don't tread any new ground for Britney.
