after the success of BBC repeats over Christmas, I have it on good authority Desmond has order the airing of Classic The One Show

I've only ever seen one episode of Taggart before and it's not my cup of tea, but it's a decent enough drama which has been pretty popular for 20+ years and it doesn't deserve to be mis-scheduled as it has been over the last 3-4 years. I think in 2008 it was, it had aired on 4 different nights of the week, with episodes airing one by one weeks or months after each other. It still managed pretty good figures (always 4m+) but clearly ITV has something against the show (or more likely STV).


An STV "insider" on the Broadcasting forums has suggested today that a "new series is already in the pipeline" and will be made by solely STV International. Obviously it's early days but if it does come back, it'll be interesting to see if ITV takes it or not.

Maybe they'll show some factual programmes in the slot? Cowboy Builders did really well there when it aired in that slot the other week so they could establish a factual strand/s there to lure viewers who don't want to watch the news on BBC/ITV1.

That's a possibility. You're right in that Cowboy Builders rated well there and other shows like Highland Emergency and How Do They Do It seem to perform well just about anywhere. I have a feeling it could still be a live news show of some kind though. My source also indicates changes to Five News around the same time including a new look.

According to yesterday's Daily Mail meanwhile, Channel 5 are close to signing Emma Crosby to front the struggling 7pm bulletin.

So a lot of changes on the way it would appear. Perhaps the channel will be rebranded officially at the same time.

you and me both know that you can repeat just about anything under the banner of "Classic" within 3 years of it first airing.

Rating that catches my eye is CSI just scraping 2 million. Back in its heyday it would often get close to 4 million in the officials.

And wasn't Justin Beiber on it? If so, I could have expected it to reach 4m in my opinion.

The simple answer to that is the circumstances were pretty exceptional. Opposite two crime dramas and the highest rating football game on BBC Two for ages, I'd say that was pretty good. I think the jury is still very much out for CSI this season and we'll need to see more data before we can be confident of any serious decline.

Also why are we comparing overnights to officials? It will probably register an official rating of around 2.6-2.8m which wouldn't be that far off last year's 3.3m opener.

Its long overdue and TBH the factual repeats that aired over Christmas improved the slot average, new factual would do much better. I'm sure they could easily bring back the wildlife docusoaps which successfully filled that slot before Studio Five took over. TBH ninety minutes of factual from 6.30pm would do quite well, GBRJ on BBC Two has proven to a success and I'm sure a similar series would rate good for Five.

I'd say the figures proved they made the wrong decision. For a channel which is there to pick out the best HD content from the BBC having it restricted by a repeat of EastEnders goes completely against the grain of what the channel is supposed to be about.


Indeed when you look at that figure and compare to the figures "red button" content used to get on Freeview alone, it has to be questioned whether pulling streams of Freeview to make room for HD was really in the interest of the licence fee payer.


Not a bad start - could have easily been 100,000 lower.


Because every channel ditching their daytime coverage isn't enough!


Basically it's down to the VHF frequency the channels were originally on. What channel number is ABC/SBS traditionally assigned too.

Interesting both with and without +1, Shameless beats Taggart. It was pretty much unthinkable when it began that any C4 drama would get more viewers than any ITV drama.


Feb 14th seems to be the date Five will become Channel 5 on screen once again. Of course the rebrand won't make a bit of difference to the ratings - only hope is Dirty Desmond loses so much money that both the Express and Daily Star fold.

Will be interesting what the ratings are like for the news coverage for the Queensland floods in Australia especially the Breakfast shows. I imagine it's high which is no surprise. Australia has taken a bit of a battering weather wise with the forest fires two years ago in Victoria and floods in Queensland.

NCIS truly is a monster but I imagine it slip back to 17-18m when Glee and DWTS return but I wonder if CBS will consider another NCIS spin-off, I'm sure they could if they wanted to especially with the CSIs on the way out.

If you're going to aggregate the ratings to boost series averages for ITV1 shows (because that's what you're effectively saying your motive is), then that's fiddling the figures.

Why not aggregate the original BBC1 with the BBC3 and BBC1 omnibus showings for EastEnders? That will surely "give a more accurate impression of how many watched the show during the week" won't it?

Or include the 3m who watched the Top Gear Middle East Special on 27th December with the 7.7m who watched it 24 hours earlier, to make it one of the most watched shows this Christmas (and indeed in 2010) with nearly 11m viewers?

Neither of those examples are any different from what you are unilaterally proposing to do.

I don't like ITV. Can't hide that one, and I've never sought to. A number of reasons for it. Doesn't make me a cheerleader for BBC1, other than "by default" of not liking the other mainstream network very much.

I support the BBC, yes. It's a fantastic and much-maligned organisation, and I will stick up for it. But if you don't selectively read my posts, you'll see plenty of maligning going on on my part too.

I have always found this thread (and DS as a whole) pro-ITV and anti-BBC, as many others have noted. So perhaps that has struck a chord with the wind-up merchant within me...

If GeorgeS continues his recent absence from the thread, then maybe the need for counter-balance will reduce...

That is rather unfortunate for The CW.

Less successfully, Southland returned to TNT last week with 2.1m and a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demo. While that's solid enough for TNT, it's not exactly a major success considering all the hype when NBC axed it. The season finale of The Closer finished up with 6.6m. The ratings notes also show that Conan has been doing very well on TBS (including Live +7, he's beating all competition in the demos).

FX also had a slow start for its new boxing drama, Lights Out, which started with just 1.5m.

CBS have renewed The Big Bang Theory for 3 seasons. The deal between producer, Warner Bros TV and network, CBS, is worth $260m with a license fee win excess of $4m an episode, more than quadruple what it was. Plus WBTV gets the syndication money of $2m an episode.

I'm certain I also read that The CW passed on making Pretty Little Liars too, which is outrating nearly everything on their network now, isn't it?

Only normally lurk on this thread but must ask what people thought about the Hugh F W's fish programme and its ratings? Probably a worthy topic but seems a bit of a boring primetime subject. Apologies if this has been discussed, I couldn't find anything on it.

4.2m last week which is higher than anything they've got. It's A18-49 ratings were about the same as The Vampire Diaries which is the CW's top scripted show by some distance.

The show is produced by Alloy Entertainment who are behind Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries as well as the short lived CW series Privileged (hence Lucy Hale cropping up in PLL) so it'd be no surprise if The CW got offered that show first and I think I've seen some mention that they did have an option on it (though nothing official).

Nobody will be praying for the failure of Skins USA more than The CW! The last thing they need is MTV gaining momentum in scripted programming.

Regarding Top Gear, I've actually never posted its official averages in this thread but if you think the BBC2 repeat should be included, then by all means do it if you want to. The BBC's Live+7 ratings will sure do that anyway. But you have to appreciate that there is no convention of repeat ratings of a non +1 channel being added to a terrestrial channel, whereas with +1 there's uncertainty around this issue and no universally accepted method. Like I said before, some sources do it, some sources don't - you will have to learn to accept that.

You're suggesting that if I were to post series averages including +1 it would distort ITV's programmes ratings to a degree to which it's not a fair representation of the number of viewers who watched the programme. Well I disagree and I've explained why in my previous long post. It takes me quite a long time to collect the ratings, calculate and post those averages and if you disagree with what I'll do then simply ignore my posts and you can calculate the series averages yourself.


Firstly, it's you that's obsessed with this whole +1 thing because whenever the debate pops up in this thread, it seems to have been started by you! I read another Ratings Thread on another website, and this whole +1 thing is not even an issue on there at all. People on there just appreciate it's something which doesn't have a universal set method about it and they don't cause any fuss over it.

And in direct response to what you've said, well it is true that ITV1's first-showing viewers will dip slightly due to the launch of ITV1+1 and the most likely destination of those viewers would be BBC1. A ITV1+1 channel is not exactly going to help boost or maintain the parent ITV1's ratings, is it? It's exactly what happened to C4 when C4+1 launched: their share of audience didn't increase when C4+1 launched, it just accelerated the decline of the parent C4 channel.


So you're basically saying it's okay for the BBC and a few other channels to benefit ratings-wise from ITV1+1 launching (which in theory they will - it's not exactly going to dent their ratings is it!) but it's not okay to consider those viewers who watch on ITV1+1, many of whom will have due to consciously deciding to miss the earlier showing. I think that's double standards, in a way.

But you know what - no one's going to change your mind about this issue. I'm not going to try and convince you anymore as I've said all I've got to say about it and made my thoughts clear. I just hope that you're not going to bring up this topic day after day because it'll get tedious. If someone does post ratings on here which happen to include +1, I hope you don't keep going on about it and derailing the thread - just accept other people have different opinions to you and there's no right or wrong regarding this issue. I know you've admitted that you get a lot of pleasure out of winding people up, but really there's no need to bring up the same thing over and over again. And besides, you will always be able to find the figures excluding +1 on other websites which cater to the sort of ratings you prefer, and indeed the overnights on here will exclude +1 most days anyway, so there's no point getting worked up about it.


Pretty good rating for it. I was expecting it to get just under 2m so it did well in quite a difficult slot.

I think you can see for yourself from this forum that there are a lot of positive views about the new series of Taggart - It's just a shame it is, like some folk have said, that it has been a victim of the STV/ITV dispute.
