Coronation Street is losing a lot of momentum between Monday and Thursday - which I think you seem to forget, instead focussing on how Thursday sometimes outrates Fridays - and isn't that bad.
Tuesday is not a good option in my view, but Wednesday 7pm could be a short-term move before the renegotiation of the football rights.
You're right of course that Thursday would probably lose a lot of its 9pm slot power - but then again - is 9pm really performing well at the moment? In hindsight, if only The Bill was still pulling in 4.5m-5.5m in that 8pm slot.
If Coronation Street remains on Thursday's, ITV might be persuaded to create some kind of Thursday night comedy drama rota consisting of Cold Feet, Benidorm, Doc Martin, Married Single Other as well as some fluffy entertainment to go inbetween (like Paul O'Grady Live and Comedy Rocks).
If ITV is able to switch Champions League/FA Cup Replays back to Tuesdays in the medium-term future, the schedule might look a little rosier, i.e (fantasy schedule alert):-
Monday
- World in Action returns to 8pm as the ITV's flagship current affairs platform, signalling ITV's commitment to serious public service broadcasting
- Monday Night Thriller seasons to air from January to March, kicking off the New Year - and later in the year if necessary. Law & Order, Taggart and other returning crime dramas to fill the void, as well as new ambitious six-parters perhaps.
Tuesday
- Emmerdale retains its half-hour episode, only doubling up as a lead-in for the Brits or in other special circumstances.
- Champions League, FA Cup and live internationals to air here from 7.30pm - if possible - if not, flop travel docs.
Wednesday
- 7pm soap hour returns, leading in to special events (award ceremonies, movies, occasional football match displacing Corrie, 90-minute drama one-offs with hour-Corrie lead-in to balance it out)
Thursday
- Single Emmerdale at 7pm, followed by regional programme at 7.30pm.
- The Bill returning at 8pm for ten-part series, swapping with other new 8pm dramas (possible Primeval move) OR Harry Hill's TV Burp and You've Been Framed
- A new comedy drama slate at 9pm, as mentioned above - as well as entertainment shows, and possibly a ten-week Hell's Kitchen.
Friday
- 7pm soap hour
- two-hour drama repeats between 8pm and 10pm, probably capable of consistent 3-5m average if it's Morse, Frost, Lewis, Midsomer, Rosemary & Thyme or Foyle's War.
