One low rating series brought about entirely by stupid ITV/STV scheduling and it's suddenly worthy of the axe? I don't think so.
This is a programme that was bringing in audiences of around 5m and winning its timeslot as recently as summer 2010.
If the programme was tired then fair enough, but the reviews I've read on here have been positive for this series.
Give the programme a break I say, it was ITV that let it down.”
Sorry I feel this is down to Stv messing with the show. Up until this series Taggart's have been truly one-offs and Itv have only ever shown them in 1's or 2's at a time. This has meant there has always been an "event" feel to them being
on.
These are the worst ever overnight figures for Taggart, having never dipped under 4 million for a new episode.
But this year Stv decided in their infinite wisdom to add a through line/serial element to the 6 episodes forcing Itv to give them a run of consecutive weeks.
Obviously, for an old (28 years) established show it was not going to be given a cushy Monday night slot.
Stv also stupidly premiered the show in Scotland only 2 months ago and opted out of Itv's most successful drama in years.
Infuriating their audience who missed out on Downton Abbey and now Stv are showing Taggart again!
The fact it has run in Scotland already has made a huge dent on these network viewing figures.
Stv this year have changed the cast, the format, the producers, the writers and the music of the show to re-invent it. However, maybe it it ain't broke don't fix it?
I fear for it next week. Silent Witness, Cup Football on BBC2, CSI and the "juggernaut" that is My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
Ouch!
