A bit on the low side for WAH and DOI but still ok.

It is hard to stick by anything that runs for two and a half hours and then wants you back for more after an hours break.

BBC Two experiences a complete reversal of fortunes, going from the biggest and only riser in week 1, to the biggest faller in week 2. Programming wise it is fair to say the schedules were not that different to last year, but audiences were smaller more often than not. The Masters Snooker final was considerably down, falling 37% year-on-year. Monday night staple University Challenge was down 16%. And Antiques Road Trip could not match Escape to the Country last year in the 5:15pm slot, where viewing was down by 11%. There are other examples but these are standouts.

BBC One is the only riser this week. Although it's only by a small amount, it is still impressive that BBC One is able to buck the trend in this way. Channel 4 managed to avert a bigger drop through some rare ingenius scheduling - Shameless stripped across the week was a big success (average: 4.14m including +1). In comparison, the first 5 episodes of last year's series aired over 5 consecutive weeks averaged 3.15m excluding +1. (including +1 would add on around 0.3m, but still a big rise year-on-year)

Channel 5 also did admirably to hold up second best out of the big five.

Yes, but it's not a like for like comparison - as it's comparing to the whole of 2010, not Jan 2010 (or technically the first 2 weeks of Jan 2010).

Comparisons to prior year should be to the same week / month as otherwise it introduces seasonal factors.

The first week of Got to Dance timeshifted well.

866,000 > 1.248m - + 44.1%

724,000 > 1.047m - + 44.6%

Should be a good total with Anytime and repeats.

BBC HD still struggling with football though.

Match of the Day on January 11 got 3.5m on BBC2 and only 289,000 on HD.

Only 7.6% HD share. Last ITV match got 15% and ITV1 HD is not available in Scotland/NI.

Decent for Being Human. This is the type of shows that needs the "Live+7" ratings to give it a much fairer figure, it could easily double or triple its audience for a week.

Pretty fantastic official figure for Silent Witness. Over 8m for a drama that has been running for 15 years is quite exceptional.

Last year, for ths first episode, it added about 200-250k in the officials and about 415k on iPlayer (but I don't know what the "narrative repeats" got), so whilst it will improve, the boost is only likely to be about 50%, rather than doubling or tripling, I'd expect...

Good ratings for Channel 5 yesterday with those movies.


Good start for Being Human, up around 100k or so on last year's series premiere. It does very well to rate above the likes of Skins, Misfits, Secret Diary of A Call Girl and other British scripted cult drama series on multichannel. (not Imbetweeners though).

Very high viewing figures yesterday as you say. Almost at the sort of levels the X-Factor was generating. Last Sunday it was around the 28 million mark during the same timeslot, so I guess Top Gear has attracted some of the usually non TV viewers.

Perhaps trebling was too much but I dont think doubling its figure is out of the question. 1.4m overnight, then add the 400k on iPlayer, 250k timeshifts, 500k first repeat on BBC3 ( it got 500,000 for a repeat last year I remember) and another 250,000 for two more late night repeats and you get double the overnight.

Excellent rating and share. I don't recall anything on C5 previously breaking 2m that started as early in the day as that.
