The Ratings Thread (Part 16)

Bad news for Neighbours. It faced stiff competition yesterday for its first episode back in Australia as all three of the major networks provided rolling coverage of the floods disaster.

Seven News at 6pm was extended to 60 minutes. They also ran specials later in the evening. Nine News was also extended to 60 minutes, and they ran 18 hours of continous live coverage in Brisbane. Ten News at Five ran for 2.5 hours.

yes it is poor timing for Neighbours, but also for the poeple involved in a flood, however since this thread is about ratings, lets focus on those.

Obviously I was hoping Neighbours would have a big launch on ELEVEN, with strong ratings, but that seems unlikely now, bad for the first day ratings, but it does mean its slightly more likely to grow after the floods end, and people get back to normal.

Great stuff for Shameless. 1.39m 16-34's too - that's superb and it would be interesting to compare with the EE and Corrie figures for last night. 922,000 16-34s for Glee too.

ITV1 - 17.0% (2009 - 17.8%) Change = Down 4.5%
C4 (inc +1) - 7.0% (2009 - 7.4%) Change = Down 5.4%
Five - 4.5% (2009 - 4.9%) Change = Down 8.2%
Multichannel - 43.8% (2009 - 41.5%) Change = Up 5.5%

Notes:

1) BBC2 is reported as actually having the biggest fall. This is slightly different to the above and will be because the numbers above are only to one decimal place (eg BBC2 MAY actually have fallen from say 7.54% to 6.86%).

2) Notwithstanding the above, it's obviously very close between BBC2 and Five for the "prize" of the largest fall. I thought someone on here said that Five had been doing well in recent months? It appears that is not the case.

3) Multichannel numbers not reported by Broadcast but are implied as balancing figures.

4) BBC1 is clearly the best performing terrestrial channel by a very wide margin in terms of both actual share and, more importantly, the change for the year.

Interesting stuff - I guess though C4 helped by improved ratings for both CBB and BB last year, despite it's awful autumn.

Surprised at BBC2 though - thought they'd had quite a strong year.

Is that Million Pound Drop or Davina. She's never been busier. The Friday/Saturday scheduling a huge mistake - I think 4 nights a week for 2-3 weeks would be a good compromise.

I understand C4 aren't having the greatest time with their schedule at the moment but they need to sort out the schedule for their "hit" shows.

Million Pound Drop should be aired in "pods" to build momentum. I think blocks of 2 weeks at most would be a good idea - but only airing Monday-Friday (or perhaps including Sunday/Excluding Friday). I'd have at least two months between it going off air and returning otherwise there is no anticipation for the program.

How about something like:
February half-term.
Easter
Sometime in May (perhaps the week before BGT goes live?)
August bank holiday
October half term
Christmas

That's a lot of episodes and should satisfy C4's need to programme it often but with more structure to it.”

It is another show which will clearly be affected by there being too much too soon.

Different 'definitions' of Primetime
17:30 to 00:00 - Channel 4
18:00 to 22:30 - BBC, Barb
19:00 to 22:30 - ITV
19:00 to 23:00 - Attentional”

Surprised C4 still go till midnight considering they've long given up putting effort into the 11pm hour.

Series 2 [10 ep] - 2.70m (h: 3.11m; l: 2.40m)
Series 3 [08 ep] - 3.01m (h: 3.24m; l: 2.56m)

Series 7 [16 ep] - 2.81m (h: 3.98m; l: 2.45m)”

I don't think many realise Shameless it wasn't until Fiona and Steve (and Kev and Veronica) had gone that it really became a force in the ratings.

The longer runs have struggled and are more hit and miss admittedly, but the good outweighs the bad and brings people back year after year, and frankly it's returning drama series which can sustain 13-22 episodes a year which British TV needs more of. C4 could do with developing another to ultimately take the place of Shameless, whilst such a regular fixture in ITV's schedule would really strengthen their drama portfolio.

P.S. Not been mentioned I don't think but Episodes had just 1000 viewers on BBC HD yesterday. Like Eric and Ernie it wasn't simulcast due to EastEnders - surely original content should take priority - those desperate to see EE in HD can catch it at 8pm, and BBC HD can easily fit it in the later slot (and 10.30pm isn't a bad slot!) if necessary.

just been wondering if itv+1 will benefit EE where it starts halfway through emmerdale, will viewers be tempted to switch over to bbc1 at 730 then watch 2nd half of emmerdale on itv+1 at 830.

there must be a huge soap crossover and we know soap viewers vote with their remotes at will.

not expecting huge numbers for carling cup match on bbc2, it does have some opposition, maybe 2.5 million as no other televised matches tonight.

The time zone difference creates difficulties. Wednesday morning there, so that's what I meant by yesterday.

Crazy scheduling!! I've already been on to Danielle Ngler about it.

BTW if BARB use 5,000 homes, how can they get a figure as low as 1,000 viewers?

FOX have renewed Raising Hope for a second season. (Deadline)

Terra Nova, the big budget Spielberg/Chernin production is to "preview" over 2 nights in May like Glee did in 2009. However, it will air on Monday/Tuesday after House & Glee rather than American Idol. (Deadline)

ESPN's college football overshadowed limited broadcast competition last night. It achieved the highest ever ratings for cable with 27.3m viewers. The previous record was an NFL match which hd 21.8m in October 2009. The highest for a non-sports broadcast was 17.2m for High School Musical 2. (Tvbythenumbers)

FOX have released the new schedule for Idol:

Quote:
“American Idol is set to return for its tenth season with new judges, new talent and new surprises along the way. This season’s judges – Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler – are a triple-threat of credibility, chemistry and talent. Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records, whose career as a music producer and record executive is unparalleled, will serve as the in-house mentor. Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, the two-night season premiere kicks off with auditions from New York / New Jersey on Wednesday, Jan. 19 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and New Orleans on Thursday, Jan. 20 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
After the two-night premiere, auditions will continue for three weeks on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning at 8:00 PM ET/PT.

American Idol auditions continue in Hollywood on Wednesday, Feb. 16 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and Thursday, Feb. 17 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) with the hopefuls who received tickets to Hollywood from the judges. The contestants who make it through Hollywood will then head to Las Vegas for the first time ever to perform Beatles songs on the Cirque du Soleil LOVE stage Wednesday, Feb. 23 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). The auditions will conclude on Thursday, Feb. 24 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) when the judges reveal – in an exciting new twist – 20 semifinalists (10 guys and 10 girls).

The semifinalists compete on Tuesday, March 1 and Wednesday, March 2 (8:00-9:30 PM ET/PT). The five male and five female contestants with the most votes will be the first to join this season’s finalists. The judges’ will also make their special “Wild Card” picks rounding out the finalists on Thursday, March 3 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT).”

A look at how the various Australian broadcasters have been covering the flood crisis.

Seven News Special: Flood Tragedy in Queensland with Mark Ferguson (opener and report)
Nine News Perth with Louise Momber (opener)
Ten Evening News Special Presentation: Queensland Flood Crisis with Bill McDonald, Georgina Lewis and George Negus (opener, report and interview with Julia Gillard PM)

The third clip is especially interesting as it includes promo material for Ten's new lineup from 5pm-7pm. (3 minutes in)

And apparently Waterloo Road returns the week after (according to a thread in this forum), which fits in perfectly.

To be fair to Ten, I thought Nine's looked far more amateurish. Although I don't have any footage for the Nine bulletins in Queensland, which may have looked somewhat better.

yes the blue screen is good for long peroids of time, however its the only one to mention the fire, which is missing from the rest. Dramatic pictures however.

EastEnders' HD debut pulled in over 1m viewers on BBC One HD.
I do think some HD scheduling decisions may come down to "Which programme is more likely to pull in the most viewers"

Sadly, looking at the HD figures for Episodes (considering it went out just 30 minutes after BBC2), they made the right decision.

I've heard EastEnders barely looks any better in HD than it does in SD, so I'm surprised it's that high.

Hmm, there are many programmes that look rather dubious on the BBC's HD channels, but that comment probably belongs/has been made many times before, in another thread.

They had a decent year, I think, but have been hurt by the loss or decline of some of their key shows. Masterchef moved over to BBC One, Spring and Autumnwatch are both well down from their prime and they only had half the episodes of Top Gear as in 2009.

IIRC, the BBC Trust considered in the recent review that relative ratings decline in the future was inevitable for BBC Two if it was to better fulfil its remit. It seemed to suggest that the future might see less of the strongly rated light factual entertainment the channel lives off.
