It did well last night: the episode two weeks ago had 576k (2.2%) so its audience seems to be growing.

Interesting night for terrestrial and multichannel.

BFGW is just a bit of a cultural phenomenon at the moment, and its still rolling and gathering pace. Just hold on and see where it stops! Silent Witness is doing really well this series, but notably stronger on Mondays than Tuesdays. Partly, I guess thats the two-parter format. Another awful night for ITV1, but Betty Driver did OK by recent standards.

Also competitive on multichannel. Sky Atlantic did OK, but its not about the ratings. I expect they'll fall quite a bit further as the novelty of the channel and the promotional blitz wears off. Secret Diary did OK at 10pm, but I don't think ITV2 will be too distraught at it ending. It's run its course and I frankly don't think they'd be bothering with this series if Showtime in the US wasn't writing the cheques.

NCIS hit an all time series high in total viewers and a season high among adults 18-49. It was up 19% and 7% in each of those measures compared to the same night last year. NCIS:LA was up 9% in viewers and 6% in the demo but The Good Wife slipped 15% among adults 18-49.

ABC was beaten in the demo by Spanish language channel Univision as V hit series lows.

Gypsy continues to be a powerhouse and the biggest ratings success of 2011 so far, only slight concern for C4 is the shows either side of it don't seem to be benefitting. There's a mass switch on at 9pm, proceeded by a mass switch off at 10pm. All well and good, but when the show's done and dusted in a few weeks time it'll be very much back to business as usual I suspect.

On the second night of Piers Morgan Tonight, Howard Stern predicted that he'd fire his booker by the second week. He was almost right. CNN have appointed a new booker for the show. One assumes that they'll not bring back The Kardashians given the bad publicity that brought the show.

But with all the attention on Piers, Deadline pick up something that hasn't been spotted so far. In adults 25-54, Glenn Beck fell 48% in January 2010 vs 2009.

While Piers has halted the 9pm decline so far, CNN's schedule continues to fall. At 8pm, Parker Spitzer is down 39% from last year when Campbell Brown hosted to a 478,000 average. At 10pm, Anderson Cooper 360 is down 34% to 595,000. In the target 25-54 demo, Parker Spitzer is down 46% and Anderson Cooper is down 43%.

Are the BBC just plugging the gaps around the Six Nations with Wipeout and IITWI? I'd guess they won't be doing anything new on Saturdays until Doctor Who returns. I presume thats likely to be 26th March - the week after primetime Six Nations and allowing a neat 7 week run before Eurovision. And does anyone know when we're expecting SYTYCD? I can see scheduling issues already if thats at the same time - how do you schedule both around BGT auditions....

EDIT: Aha... forgot about Lets Dance. That should bolster BBC One in March.

Take Me Out seems to be getting later and later. Not good for a show that picks up a lot of young viewers just before they head out.

Excellent scheduling there - why they aren't doing it this weekend I don't know but at least they've cottoned on now. 7:20pm is a good slot for Push The Button too. Takeaway always did better starting before 8pm and I think the same applies to PTB, and with the revamped format I can see it getting 6m+ for the opening show at least, especially as TV Burp will probably get 6m+ with that scheduling. Reading the info about PTB on the ITV Press Centre it sounds a bit more like Takeaway but with the key elements of the last series of PTB and I think with scheduling like that it should do better than it did last year as it sounds like the show will be better.

Also, it looks like Piers Morgan's Life Stories will be returning quite soon as the first episode of the new series will be recorded on Monday 14th February. The last series began just under 2 weeks after the first episode was filmed, and I can see the same thing happening again this time, which would result in it starting on Saturday 26th February, which fits well as the last in the series of Benidorm will be the week before, and it means with 6 episodes plus the Lloyd Webber special (like the Alan Sugar one I think) it'll end on Saturday 9th April which is the week before BGT will presumably return as is the same weekend as it ended on last year, so it looks like a good bet to me.

Finally, what do people think Midsomer will get tonight? With it being a big episode, combined with the fact that ITV have advertised it quite a lot (for once!) I think it'll get 6.5-7m, possibly even sneaking past the 7m mark, as the competition is pretty limited (I can't imagine it sharing much of an audience with Waterloo Road).

How have the Mad Men repeats been fairing late evening on BBC Two? It would be interesting to compare with the figures for Sky Atlantic primetime.

Let's Dance is confirmed to be returning for (I think) another 4 week run, so presumably that will run from 19th February to 12th March if it follows last year's pattern. That seems about right for Doctor Who and I'm pretty sure SYTYCD will return on the same night, and I think it's a 12 week run ending on 11th June (may be wrong there though). Scheduling around BGT auditions will be difficult and I bet we'll get a rehash of the Doctor Who/Over The Rainbow scheduling of last year, which I don't think worked out too well tbh. I'd rather they aired the other way around, with SYTYCD first, but that'd probably tank at 6:15pm in April/May. Would a Sunday slot for one of them be out of the question though?


I agree, and I think that may be a reason why it's a little down on where it ended up last year at the moment. I've said before that for the next series (if there is one, which I think there will be) it should return to the 7pm hour and I stand by that. A show like TMO ending at 9:50pm is silly.

How come? Midsomer is new. Nettles' last episode. Little competition either so it should walk it.

I'm not 100% sure, but I've read that The National Lottery: Secret Fortune begins that night, replacing In It To Win It.


I also thought that Doctor Who would return in March but the editor of Doctor Who Magazine was pretty certain that DW won't return until at least mid-April. I suspect DW will still be in its 6pm slot with SYTYCD airing directly after that at 6:45/7pm, so that it doesn't clash with BGT (8pm). I'd prefer DW at 7pm but it seems like the BBC are happy to continue airing DW in the early slot as it timeshifts well anyway.

What do ITV have for the 7 weeks of BGT? Both The Prisoner and The Whole 19 Yards are gone so they'll need about 2 hours of new series.

If the new shows can cover some of the losses for BGT (which is likely to start off a fair bit lower than last year) then ITV could still end up improving from last year - and given how badly The Prisoner did, it shouldn't be hard to improve that slot quite dramatically.

I'm fearing a recreation of last years scheduling too. SYTYCD is going to be pushed earlier and earlier - especially if ITV have any 90 minute BGT's from 7.30 or 7.45. Either would work fine on Sundays, in my opinion - but I can't see them doing it for a whole DW run. There's too much heritage and it would smell of retreat.

They recorded a new series of The Cube in January so that will probably air in the 7pm slot before Britain's Got Talent. I don't think they've announced any potential series which could air at 9pm after BGT. I thought Life Stories would go there but Score's probably spot-on with what he's said about LS returning in late-February.

They've got a couple of comedy pilots such as The Marriage Ref and Security Men (more about this to be announced later this week) which they could air after BGT. They might even commission a full series of The Marriage Ref having seen the pilot. Or they might show some movies after BGT such as Mamma Mia.

The Cube is due back in April so that'll probably take the 7pm slot before it. Dunno about after it, they filmed a pilot of The Marriage Ref on Sunday with Jo Brand as host, so if that went well we could see that there. Benidorm also has a new series due in March/April so maybe that'll get the slot (which would be a really good idea imo).

As for BGT itself, I'm becoming curious as to how it will do this year. Based on the opinions of some people who've been the auditions, McIntyre is really good on it and the Hoff is his usual crazy self. It launced with 10.6m last year, so I think it'll get 9.something for the launch this year but if the new panel goes down well then it may increase as the series goes on (the talent is apparently better this year too).


Yeah, I can't see them running Doctor Who on Sundays, and moving all of SYTYCD to Sundays could leave Saturdays a little bare. A more inventive idea perhaps could be to have SYTYCD performances on Fridays at 9pm with the results on Saturdays at about 7:30pm, so before BGT at 8pm. That would leave Doctor Who at 6:45pm which seems fairly respectable. Alternatively they could air the Dance results after BGT in the 9pm hour but they may want Casualty to start just as BGT ends like last year which would prevent that from happening.

I reckon at the very least you can add 1m to that.

Only possible stumbling block could be a jubilant Waterloo Road for the first hour, fresh from its shock win at the ITV Awards. Okay so it wasn't an Emmy, but it might experience a mini bounce.
