And this one from over just over a quarter of a century ago didn't quite make it into the top 40, but in my opinion should have done:

A forgotten soul song I spent ages googling. Personally I prefer this funky number to the original Solomon Burke/B.B. King hit of the same name.

Gene Chandler - Time Is A Thief

And this definitely should have been a hit, when it was released here in 1981-so why wasn't it!?

Some Underrated new wave. Hound Of Love mentioned some later songs by them but here's their earliest.

The Sisters Of Mercy - Alice

Irish group, this was maybe their closest to hitting the big-time.

Microdisney - Birthday Girl

Slightly Smiths derivative Aussie new wave

The Go-Betweens - Head Full Of Steam

And by way of contrast cold wave, could be called ethereal wave, considering this french singer's high pitched breathy, sensual vocals

Coldreams - Eyes

Remember when The Housemartins used to describe themselves 'The Fourth Best Band In Hull'? Well these were the best.

Similar to this is another funky reworking of a crooner song by Italo-Disco legend Claudio Simonetti; a bit of rarity as the album which was supposed to follow this single was never released.

Easy Going - Go Away Little Girl

Didn't it peek into the charts at #39? It's a fantastic track, and slightly ahead musically in terms of the popular dance music at the time. Pity that YT version's got such tinny and unstable audio, a good version of the 7" was on there at one time. I've loved it for years, got it on some kind of generic 'disco' compilation on the cheapie shelf in Woolworths.

Yes, it got to No.39. When I meant it should have been a hit, I meant a much bigger hit, because it's such a lovely track. Since my original post, I have since found this 3 minute version.

Maybe the greatest live guitar album ever, Friday Night in San Francisco paired fusion guitarists Al DiMeola and John McLaughlin with Spanish guitarist Paco DeLucia to create a dazzling confection of guitaring prowess for the lucky crowd at san Francisco's Warfield theatre.

^ good stuff, thanks for the link.

I don't know how you'd classify Balavoine; like his compatriot Polnareff, he doesn't fit into one category. His early death 25 years ago shocked France but his mournful later songs almost presage his demise...

SOS d'un terrien en detresse

La vie ne m'apprends rien

Je ne suis pas un héro

This modern arrangement of an aria by Purcell really gives you the shivers.

Klaus Nomi - The Cold Song
His version of the Cold song is stunning and the performance is so sad once you know the full story

Anyone else familiar with Captain Sensible's Women & Captains First LP, from 1982? Try these two super tracks.
