Best known for his nineties monster hit 'Here Comes The Hotstepper', here's a couple of good ones from the mid-eighties from Ini Kamoze.

Ini Kamoze - Trouble You Trouble Me (1984)

ABC - That Was Then But This Is Now

Both 1983, both a departure from their norm ( well I thought so) & both good (well I thought so!!!)

Both 1987 I think and had a big influence on the hip-hop around the corner.
Coldcut had Stop this Crazy Thing
which is a great song.

I've just listened to that! I've remembered it for years, but couldn't remember who did it! I just remembered it being on the radio a lot during the first term I was away studying for my degree.

A big hit in Spain and believed to have been second in their 1985 internal pre-selection for Eurovision. Alaska y Dinamara "Ni tu ni nadie":

"Flames of Paradise" by Jennifer Rush and Elton John - both big voices, and failed to make top 40 in 1987:

I might have mentioned this before, but Westworls with Do You Believe in the West World? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eX_6K1xGApY

REM were quite big in the 90s but they had a brilliant early single Stand in 1989 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKKqLl_ZEEY

The full length version is actually 11.21 long on the CD single, the album version is an edit (a slight one).

Brilliant track

Strawberry Switchblade were best known for Since Yesterday, but this track, Let Her Go was also great:

I have recently tracked down an Ultimate Collection CD which features all tracks from their debut album (except for one "reprise"), and although sounding a little dated, it features some good tunes.

Also, this, by Aussie band 1927 never really troubled the charts here, but is one of my favourite songs of all time.

I have yet to meet anyone else that has heard of Mark Shreeve who was/is Britain's answer to JMJ.

Frazier Chorus - Sloppy Heart

Frazier Chorus - Dream kitchen

Frazier Chorus - Typical

Jennifer Rush - Destiny

No 4 in Germany during 1985 but didn't get anywhere near the UK charts. A really good tune I think.

I slightly preferred Let Her Go to Since Yesterday, and almost whince when I hear SS described as one-hit wonders.

After some items from communist Czechoslovakia I found for the 60s and 70s threads, here are a few items from the 80s.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDOdliq0Bu8&feature=plcp

0:06:35 - Helena Vondráčková - A ty se ptáš, co já (The winner takes it all - 1981)
0:41:16 Petra Janů - Už nejsem volná (Jennifer Rush)

A czech song that clearly shows western influences
1:29:50 Richard Muller - Po schodoch (1986)

Finally from 1989, right at the end of the communist era :-
1:11:18 Jiří Korn - "Miss Moskva" (1989)
This was a real surprise when I found it, probably a "cult classic" for those in the know. Hard to believe it wasn't released in western countries so enjoy it now, it's also on last,fm

For some reason, seemingly out of the blue, I today recalled this great track, which became nearly-not quite-a top forty hit in late 1982.
