Hehe - yes - couldn't let any discussion on '80s music go much further without a mention of the wee bugger.

Oh, loved Scritti Politti! Their first album was very different though, got a bit of a shock when I bought it.

And Duel, cracking track.

A bit of both - I arrived late to the gig (the Marquee when in was on Charing Cross Road) and there were a bunch of scuffy herberts I assumed to be the support act on stage playing very average shambling indie guitar pop... 2 songs in I recognised "You've Got The Power" and realised they were Win themselves! Yes, far from the shiny ultrapop of the records, it was far closer to the sound of Davey Henderson's earlier Fire Engines... still love the records though!

That Cupid & Psyche album was truly fantastic.

I personally preferred the other version of Duel - Jewel

The story goes that when Scritti's first album ("Songs To Remember") came out in 1982, Green Gartside went around the London record shops, making sure it was being well-promoted, and picking up copies of other albums out at the same time. One of these was "Thriller", which he listened to and took to his record label boss, saying, "Now that's what I want the next album to sound like!"

Rough Trade couldn't afford the proposed studio fees, so Green went to Virgin instead, and the wonderful C&P was the result...

A few here

One I never heard on british radio but it was very popular in Ireland
Daisy Chains - "No time to stop believing in love" 1984
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEbyP6NrVEo

An unusual take on an old Beatles hit by Ted Chippington on Vindaloo (1986)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrEZZwRzMIw

Two ladies from Germany made this video to go with their song from 1987 - it was on VH-1 in the early days
Humpe & Humpe - "Careless Love"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6BFJJPF1Xk

This band were almost an early version of Aqua - 10 years too early
The Other Ones - "Holiday" 1987
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1EH9vGJ2gI

Not issued here but a track with a singer sounding very like Kate Bush
Mandy Winter - "Julian" 1987
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wUs9...eature=related

From an LP issued in 1981
New Musik - "Dead fish (don't swim home)"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfdhT2AEhWU
I have played this to people who weren't around in the early 80s, they all thought it was recorded years later!

Finally - an absolute classic from 1985 - but it wasn't a hit - why not?
SAL SOLO "Music and You"

Some excellent tracks there, Mike. Not heard any of them before, but most of 'em could have been UK hits if they'd been a bit luckier or had the right backing from record companies.

I think New Muzik got into the charts with another song; "living by numbers" (or certainly got some airplay at the time) - their albums were good, too, if I recall.

Mandy Winter should indeed by checked out by any fans of early Kate Bush.

Sal Solo and Classix Nouveau never really did it for me - they seemed a bit too derivative for my liking, but maybe I'll check out some of their stuff again. Thank God for YouTube!

New Musik also had a hit with "This World of Water".(1980)

unfortunately they recorded for GTO and after the company was taken over by CBS, they weren't given much promotion.
I have these songs on their only US released LP.

Mandy Winter was german, that was her biggest success and after a few other releases on EMI & CBS she went back to hairdressing!

Moti Special included Michael Cretu (who later recorded gregorian chants as Enigma).
Moti Special - "Cold Days Hot Nights" (1984)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeMqu9sUDaM
and he produced several successes for his wife!
Sandra "Stop for a minute" (1986)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J3QoC_R42M
The song was featured on a popular german tv show - the YouTube video shown has no connection with it.

That Moti track is pure '80s! - Who'd have thunk that Enigma emerged later..

Pity about Mandy Winter going back to hairdressing - now I could understand Ted Chippington doing that

Here's a few more '80s nuggets:

Thomas Dolby - Radio Silence great singles, great albums, great videos. You can tell he took great care in his arrangements, and the music still stands up very well today.

This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren - the Youtube comments make me smile: "THIS SONG ROCKS ,ITS GOING TO BE A CULT FAVORITE "

Peter Murphy - Final Solution OK, he was never going to actually be Bowie, but he acquitted himself well.

Jeff Beck - Star Cycle Friday, 6 o'clock, Channel 4.....

Ice House - Hey Little Girl - Still surprised that Roxy never sued 'em!

Kirsty Maccoll's, 'He's on the beach', was an absolute pop gem, which scandalously never came anywhere near to bothering the charts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EV5pNowizQ
