As you can see the audio described MP2 track uses a higher bitrate.

Just tried setting up an ftp video source from xbmc on xbox and it doesn't work The ftp server on the humax doesn't recognise the command so I guess it must be a stripped down ftp server.

Edit : xbmc plays the SD ts files fine though once they are copied to my NAS.

I know it wont be much help on your xbox but I used netdrive to mount the ftp folder as a drive in windows - this then allowed me to play the files without copying them over first.

Interesting - so they switch to 192k AC-3 for stereo. Thanks graham. I shall believe your ears!

Thanks for the tip as I like the idea of having the Humax as the host and being able to stream off to various clients i.e. without having to move the files around unneccesarily (unless archiving). It will also be interesting to see if this allows further development like a web admin interface to be created to allow for remote scheduling as that seems to be what the original creator of this wanted. Shame we won't be able to stream HD stuff though due to the encryption

BBC1-Hd has not been encrypted since November 2010. Additionally the time shift buffer file is not encrypted either

There should be as the signal also includes the normal stereo channel. Unfortunately the Foxsat does not you select this, but Dbviewer on a PC does.

My HDR is connected to my hifi by a Toslink cable. When I select an HD channel all I get is a series of clicks. The only way I could avoid this is to use an analogue connection. High Definintion picture with Low Definition sound! (My Hifi likely has a better DAC than that in the HDR.)

I have the same problem when accessing BBC1 HD and BBC HD. I use a Digital/Analogue converter via digital co-ax between Freesat box and Hi-Fi system. My Freesat box (Sagem) does not have a menu function to send PCM (instead of DD), so I can't use my Hi-Fi system unless I use the analogue audio output of my box, whenever DD 2.0 or 5.1 is used. In my area ITV1 HD (Granada version) doesn't transmit Dolby Digital, so I can use the digital audio output of my Sagem box on that HD channel.

I've been using Filezilla to transfer files from my HDR to my PC.

Initially, when transfering a 2gb file, this kept failing, but since I set the timeout to infinity it now keeps going after the pauses. Has anyone else encountered this problem and found a better solution?

I can not get the ftp facility in Windows 7 IE to work. It just hangs after I enter the userid and password.

The Humax HDR file structure is quite complex, which I suspect may be one of the reasons that Humax themselves have not implemented ftp. (The structure is much more complex than on my Freeview Toppy.)

Has anyone worked out what all the different files are for?

I am very grateful to Mogie and look forward to future developments.

Above sounds abnormal, IE lets me in on Windows 7 and I didn't change any default settings in Filezilla either to get that to work.

All the files starting with a period appear to be for thumbnails and can be ignored. I don't think thats why they didn't implement FTP, I think they were looking to do a streaming solution DLNA etc which "average joe" could just use ... FTP would generate too many support calls I think. Could also be that adding features to a new version generates more sales.

Now that the firmware has been cracked, only a matter of time before the HD encryption bites the dust - as we know the signal is transmitted clear and the HDR is encrypting it for some misguided reason.

I also can get in via using IE. (IE9 Beta).
I see you can then also use IE's > PAGE > Open FTP site in Windows Explorer. Neat

Sorry to disillusion you, but the firmware contains several discrete sections holding Linux kernel, busybox OS, and the Humax custom software. The only part that has been modified is the one that contains the GNU licensed Linux busybox OS. This has had ftp and telnet binaries plus corresponding startup scripts added. All kudos to mogie for achieving this, but It's a completely different ball game to try and reverse engineer MIPS binaries in order to extract encryption algorithms. I just can't see it happening. Best you can hope for is additional services like DLNA server being added.

Not a clue what a tac file is but the others are sidecar support files required to store information not in the transport stream files. (.ts). Could be the chapter thumbnail images.
To import and play back non native video on the hdr these files have to be synthesised using a free uitility written by Raydon (AV2HDR).

Extract from the help file

The main video file has the filename extension of .ts and the two support files have extensions of .nts and .hmt


The .nts file contains the timing information required to provide seeking, and play from last position functions on the HDR.


The .hmt file contains full details of the recording, including Electronic Program Guide information.

I think tac files are chapter thumbnails downloaded when the HDR wakes up for maintenance.

Just wanted to add the comment that I tried the new firmware, and it works great. It took three attempts to find a USB drive that would work properly. A (once-expensive!) Kingston 2GB Datatraveler was recognised as a USB disk but I couldn't do anything with it in the Hummy, but a 1GB SD card in a £2 ebay USB SD card reader worked fine. Weird.

It would be awesome to have this as a permanent feature. I tried copying the .ts files to my Mac and they play great with VLC, now I just have to figure out how to edit them and turn them into DIVX/XVID ...

I use multiavchd http://multiavchd.deanbg.com/ converts most video files and resizes files to correct format (aspect ratio) so AV2HDR can convert them for FoxSat

I mange to add ftp to my PVR with one of those sticks, but I could not store any progamme files on it depsite reformatting it with a couple of different PCs.

Has anyone tried and managed to get VLC to play directly from the Humax? I've tried different URLs (encoding for the space) but no luck. For example, in VLC select "Open Network" and use the following URL (the space in the filename presumably needs to be encoded for example with a "+", not 100% sure though):

The detailed log from VLC shows that it logged in correctly but it seems like the FTP conversation isn't going right (or it's that bleeding space character again buggering me...). Any idea, anyone? The FTP server on the Humax side doesn't seem to have a log for debugging...
