Few people seem to do background research into the animal's needs before going ahead and getting it.

I've known people to get rid of their pets as soon as their circumstances change (e.g. baby on the way, animal too messy etc.) and to me it seems really silly because surely these things should have been foreseen as potentially happening in the future before they got the animal and they therefore should never have collected it in the first place.”

Yes, it would be good if people thought of the cons, as well as the pros and how their lives might predictably change (as in having children). (Which doesn't mean to say that no one makes mistakes or thinks aren't as anticipated. Stuff happens!).

I think she was blase about the decision to get a cat in the first place!! My sister is very upset that she is now having to go down this route.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts - as I say I am not about to disown my sister and nor am I going to let this cause an argument. I posted on here literally the moment I found out so was very angry at the time. I know that my sis isn't taking the decision to rehome lightly.... It's something she has given a lot of thought to and sadly feels there is no alternative... Blase was a very emotive way for me to describe this situation but as I say I was pi55ed off!

I agree. One is an absolute pleasure to be around, so giving of love and loyalty and yet asking so little in return. The other is a child.
