Humax HD Freesat PVR problems when changing channel
Hi, I have a Humax HD Freesat box with PVR.
After the resent bad weather, Specifically last weekend, I noticed that the signal quality was particularly bad. However this seems to have solved itself. But a new problem has arissen. I have 2 signals coming into the box, from the same dish. 1 is registering at 80%, the other fluctuates between 70-80%. When I change channel, from one transponder to another, I get a No or Bad Signal error message, then after a few seconds, this clears, and the channel is visible. As an example, changing from BBC1 to BBC2 is fine, but changing from BBC2 to ITV, ITV to Channel 4, or ITV back to BBC, I get the error message. I thought it might be the signal quality from the LNB, specifically from the snow, ice, rain - freezing and refreezing, but this seems to be ok. Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening? Is there a setting I can change (that one of the kids might have changed by accident)? A switch box somewhere? Thanks in advance for your help. |

Check your coax cables for signs of water ingress.

If there are signs off it, will I have to replace them, or can I just "dry them out"?

and ensure that the lnb end is properly waterproofed
How?The cables were already encased in a rubber sheath, and then the LNB head's base was pulled down over them. This clearly wasn't enough if this is the cause. Could it be a software error? I noticed that the machine was in standby this past week, as I was away, and that ALL 7 of my recordings that I had preprogrammed had failed 100%. ... and just now, even changing from the epg back to ITV caused the error. Do you think it will be both cables, that are the cause, or just one- as I say, signal strength is still pretty high. Thanks for your help. |

I've just done two more tests.
Test 1. Record BBC1 and ITV1 on timer, whilst watching ITV1. Result BBC1 recording failed. ITV1 recording Succeeded. Test 2. Record BBC1 by pressing record, then change channel to ITV1. Result BBC1 records. ITV1 shows for a short while, but after time, the signal fades, and I get the "Bad or No Signal" message. |

Result BBC1 records. ITV1 shows for a short while, but after time, the signal fades, and I get the "Bad or No Signal" message. Try this With the power off disconnect tuner 2. Power on start an instant recording on BBC-HD, start a second on BBC1-HD. This should work. Power off swap tuner 1 connection for the one that was on tuner 2 repeat the above. If either cable fails to allow the above that's the faulty one. Connect a known good cable to tuner 1 in, with a short piece of coax connect tuner 1 out to tuner 2 in. Carry out a factory reset to get the hdr into single cable mode. Start the two instant recordings BBC-HD and BBC1-HD. Press the channel up or down button till you are watching a different channel to the recoprding pair. Press pause. If this works both tuners in the hdr are working properly. |

I rechecked the diagnostics this morning, and could see that one of the tuner signals was fluctuating between 0 and 10% and not the 60% I thought I had seen. So I disconnected it from the box, then when I went to look at the connection on the LNB, I could see that the connector had broken inside the LNB, and was only "connected" by the fact that it was screwed into place.
So I simply tidied up the connection, and reconnected. The tuner signal reverted to 80%, and the test recordings that I did, as yesterday, both succeeded, and I'm no longer getting the "Bad or No Singal" message when changing channels between transponders. So, problem solved. Result! Thanks for your help. |
