Ooh more details... they did a mini catch up yesterday as well, which is better than waiting until they repeat the series at a later date and spend 98% of the repeat just repeating and 2% if that, catching up on what happened next. Quote:

Dont these people ever research the price of houses when they want to emigrate? Quote:

... yesterday I noticed how much the exchange rate has changed since last summer, so they'll be much worse off in Australia if selling up here and trying to buy there (haven't looked at NZ)...

I wonder why they do not do a programme called "Up Over" Get a Aussie or Kiwi family and bring them to the UK and see if they would prefer our lifestyle.
My sister emigrated in the 1970's to Australia when all you needed to do was get on a plane, arrive and say you are staying. She and her husband had to have at least 2 jobs each to make things meet and hardly ever had the chance to enjoy life in the sun. They do have a nice house now and are down to one job each. They are now both 60 and still working. My younger sister emigrated twice and came back twice! I went through all the emigration procedure in the late 1980;s and was accepted. I went and had a look for 6 weeks and decided it was not for me. I would imagine if you are quite wealthy living in Australia would be quite nice. Micheal Parkinson goes for 3 months every year to avoid our winters so I believe. |

I was chatting with some Australian tourists in London recently, and they were saying how amazingly cheap the UK seemed compared to Australia at the moment... they were from Brisbaine, and were saying they were thinking of buying a flat in London as an investment rather than locally, as it was so much better value!
Our present day politicians devalue it by 30% and manage to blame it on the Euro and seem to get away with it! |

Micheal Parkinson goes for 3 months every year to avoid our winters so I believe. I've got my own experiences. Aunt and Uncle and 5 cousins emigrated to Australia via my Uncle's employer. This was over 40 years ago I think, not quite sure. They stayed over there and I imagine have a better standard of living than if they'd stayed here. We're not in touch but so far as I know none of them returned to live here. We've holidayed over there, Perth, Sydney and Queensland (not the Gold Coast, higher up, north of Cairns) and although we really enjoyed the visit, nothing tempted me to swap here for there. My daughter used to have a boyfriend who was brought up in NZ and she went over there to holiday at his father's home. His father married a New Zealander and has a new family there, while his mother is with a New Zealander but moved back here. His mother has always wanted to go back there, but her partner wont hear of it and his father would come back here but can't face trying to move his wife and children away from her family. They all seem really torn. Daughter came back to London grateful for what she has here. Another person I know was born in NZ and came here where their children were born. Having subsequently returned to NZ it seems that they miss equally the stuff they like about the UK - when they lived here, the boot was on the other foot. It takes all sorts I suppose but a big trick is in realising the benefits of what you have and not always imagining the grass is going to be greener somewhere else. |

Yes Shaggy, that was today's. They're quite young though, 28 and 29 - young to have the family they have and all that responsibility.

I do often wonder when i watch these programs how people form there opinions about these
places?its not 1950 anymore we have the internet they want to emigrate to a place theyve never been to they do zero research about climate or prices for house food utilities all of which is easy to find out i think they must live in a dream world and think neighbours is real where the sun always shines and everyones good looking numptys |

I'm convinced a few this series have only gone for a free weeks holiday! It can take over 24 hours to get there, then, on the East Coast, its about 10/11hours ahead of the UK so youre jetlagged when you get there, then its the same amount back. So youre probably knackered for about 2 weeks. All just to make a tv programme & get a free holiday. However my sons gone there for a years work/holiday & having a great time at the moment. The salaries are very high, but have to be because the cost of living is so expensive. |

Me too......really yummy! Fell for her when I first saw her on Popstars and still find her very attractive.
![]() ![]() The only thing I dont like is the way she waves her arms around when she's presenting and she tends to over-dramatise each family's situation.....but other than that, I think she's good! |

Anyone watching the Green family from Fife today? visiting Sydney - estimate the value of their house at something like £160,000, likely budget of £180,000 if they stretch...shown apartments and a house starting at £267,000 and the only one they like is £400,000. Crazy.

I just find the whole premise of this programme wrong. It seems to me that the story is always:

Their property in the UK is not worth as much as they think .
They can't afford the type of property they want down under especially the one with a beach view.
The cost of living is greatly higher down under.
They would have to start at the bottom in a new job down under = relative lower wages
The dream lifestyle they think they can have is just that a dream.
So if they do decide to move down under then they will definitely be taking a step back in their standard of living. |

I must have missed something here, how did they come up with the £20,000 disposable income?

I can't work out how they did their sums. I suppose they estimated a salary for him, even though his job wouldn't transfer and added a salary for her that she isn't getting here?
It seems very strange indeed, especially as it indicated they've got negative equity in their home. All the shows I've seen this series have estimated negative equity ![]() I just had a quick look on the net, it's absolutely ridiculous showing people from Fife (average house price £167,442, 222 days to sell according to home.co.uk) around Sydney, which has been one of the strongest worldwide capital cities worldwide for property performance. Most people who emigrate recognise that they're going to have to work hard and make economies and that it's not all sunshine, knocking off early and getting down the beach. The silly thing about today is that they loved their home and Dad and the girls loved their lives as they are. Mum hasn't even qualified yet and is just assuming she wont get a job she likes. Maybe the trip taught them to count their blessings? |

My sister emigrated to Australia and soon realised it wasn't all lounging on the beach and sailing on yachts, it took them 4 years to save to all come back and they had to start all over again on the bottom of the housing ladder, she said it was the biggest mistake she ever made.
