Yes Rose, they were in NZ yesterday.
Here we are - we like this house but it's £25,000 over our budget. Everything is 30% more expensive! I have two sisters in Australia. One went out in the early 70s the other in the mid 80s. They had to work very hard over there. Needing to have two jobs with no time to enjoy really the lifestyle you would expect. The sting in the tail comes when you reach retirement age. If you have a bit of money in the bank you do not even get a state pension! |

It's a bit like the escape abroad programmes where people think they'll buy a ski lodge, do a bit of B&B and spend half their time skiing instead of shopping, cooking, cleaning, laundry and chores, chores, chores

Haha, there ya go again... Adelaide this time!! Brisbane was there as a choice, but of course they weren't gonna send them there were they? I tell ya this show is fixed! And how on earth did these parents decide they're better off in Oz? :-o Dad has to do a different job at the bottom of the ladder, mum has to work full time and take a step backwards in her responsibilities, their teenagers don't want to go and they hated all the houses they saw!??? What's the point in them going out there to test it out for free if they're not gonna take any notice of what's staring them in the face?? Weird!

There was a family last week who had a house in Cockermouth that was still in the process of being renovated and they reckoned it was worth over £800K. When they got it valued (whilst they were in New Zealand) it was put at around £350K.
I'm not sure what cloud cuckoo land they were living in but if they thought they could get £800K for an unfinished messy house in a not particularly fashionable bit of the Lake District it wasn't based in reality. |

The majority seem to think they can swap a terrace/semi or less costly detached for a big detached house on a large plot with a swimming pool and sea views, be mortgage free and work half the hours they work here.
Gods yes. I've only started watching it this week, but seriously, where do these people pick up ideas about how they can afford luxury Australia? Home and Away? They all bleat on about "The Australian Lifestyle" yet seem to have no idea that you can't swap a tiny semi etc for a beach side palace with a pool and only work part time. They all seem so shocked that Australian houses they can actually afford are mostly normal sized houses except......in Australia. And that they might actually have to work harder. My My, you mean the streets aren't paved with gold and yet everything costs pennies? Do any of them even do any research at all? I guess watching people who've done their homework and know if jobs will be avaliable and aren't surprised by houseprices aren't exactly what the programme makers want though. |

I am considering moving to a nice Caribbean island to write a book - I would like the BBC to pay for me and my partner to go out there for a couple of weeks to stay in a luxury hotel (for research purposes, that's where my book is going to be set) and show me some properties by the beach that cost less than £100K before I decide that actually I prefer living in London after all.

I think it's interesting that last week one family were introduced to another ex-pat family who'd lived in Australia for two years but were now coming home again. They missed their family too much.
I'm also glad that they've added (not sure if it started this series or last) the financial spreadsheet section. That must be a real eye opener. |

What gets me with this programme is the amount of emotional blackmail some of the families use to get their relatives not to move to Australia. Well, that and the pie in the sky dreamers....

Is This Sponsored by the Auzzie & Kiwi Governments?
It seems very strange to me that everybody I have seen on these shows votes to leave the UK for downunder. Many of the shows I have viewed have featured Adelaide for Aus and Christchurch for NZ. Could it be that these are places that these governments would like to particularly populate or are the producers really acting independently and telling people to look at these places because they get "more bang for their buck"? I note that they have pulled Brisbane show(s) for the time being. Who would want to move to a city that could be swamped in this way? But hey, what about NZ? You never know when an earthquake / tsunami could hit.
I also note that no mention is made of climate. Perth and Adelaide can be VERY hot in summer whilst the winters are not particularly good either. I think that they should include a temperature and rainfall graph for each place. Cairns and Darwin have terrible wet seasons. Even Sydney gets more rain than much of southern England. So, anybody for a free trip downunder - all expenses paid? Send in your applications now for the next series and make sure you vote to move at the end. |

It's also interesting that all of the shows that I've seen have featured white working class families (who, ironically, want to move to 'middle class areas' Down Under). Although I did see a show a year or so ago, featuring a British Indian dentist wanting to move to Perth. During the programme he was told quite clearly by one of the resident dentists that there is a lot of racism Down Under and any non-white's can expect some level of it. Also, they dont really go through the process of applying for a migrant visa. I'm sure a 'move' is not as easy as its made out in this show. |

Living in Australia isn't everything, i have friends who've lived out there for some years and are coming home mainly due to the high cost of living and being so far away from everything. least here in the UK we're lucky enough to be able to fly to europe for some sun and it's only 2-3 hours away. everything is on our doorstep and i sometimes think we take it for granted.

Maybe, just maybe (conspiracy theory coming here) it's sponsored by a UK government agency and the subliminal message is that it's better here than you thought ![]() I think they did mention temperature yesterday, saying it had been in the 40°s! The odd thing I find is the overly dramatic script and presentation - if they move this could ruin them ![]() Each day we get

Relatives and friends who rely on them as much as the air they breathe
A family member who doesn't want to go
Much higher cost of living than anticipated
Cash problems: less equity to take with them from their own home and higher property prices overseas than they expected
Not liking the properties they've been told they *can* afford
A question mark over work and working hours
After we've heard this fairly depressing tale of a dream destroyed, guess where they choose they want to live? I wonder how many people do actually get their Visas and go (and stay) |

Last one I watched had a gay couple on.
But they did not really say anything about the gay scene down under. I am quite a few shows behind as I have them on my planner. |

Today was "Wanted Down Under Revisited"
It consisted of a complete re run of the familys first program and finished with the family still now not having moved to Austrailia and at least a year away from actually making a move. I don't know why i watch it anymore! |

And the woman was another "me, me, me"
Wanting a swimming pool and huge rooms for a few quid. Everything was about her life and what she wanted. |

Just finished watching today's on delay TV.
Grrr, if it's so hard leaving Grandaughter, then Don't Go! Simples ![]() I wouldn't mind knowing the mothers anti aging secret though. I doubt I will look that good when I'm a Grandparent. |
