Interesting casting. I'm actually quite hopeful about this version...

Can't be any worse than the Stallone version

Nothing could be worse than the Stallone version. A film so far removed from the original source material it was untrue. It was more like a fan-flick.

Mega City 1. A place that could be so dark and violent.

The extream violence of it's citizens was only outstripped by the very authorities that ruled them...

The Judges.

Was this Madeline Madrigal ever in the comics (not read 2000AD in about 10 years) or is she a totally new character?

Reading the synopsis, it's a new character with a brand new storyline.

Cheers

With her being called Ma Ma I was wondering if she was based on Ma 'Green' Fingers Mahaffey j/k

What's the bets she turns into some sort of romantic side kick type? Surely the main plot can't just be about a block war with all the rich history of Dredd to plunder? I reckon it'll start out like that and thd Dredd and Ma Ma team up to take on the real villain who'll be someone like Orlok. I hope they don't make it too dark though. I'd like to see some of the humourous craziness that goes on in MC1 like Otto Sump or the kneepad craze.

Apparently so.

One scenario, in one block. The entire same story told in the space of less than 24 hours.

It would seem the film is laying the foundations for it's sequel, involving the Judges PSI Division, which is expected to be 'The Dark Judges'.

Can't wait for that!

Seems a strange way to go about starting of a franchise. Hopefully they can still catch the scale of MC1 somehow.

It seems a good way to start one as far as I'm concerned. They would want to get as many non-Dredd fans as possible to watch the first film in order for it to be a success so as to enable them to make more. If they had the Dark Judges in the first film there would be too much back story and that would scare off the newbies.

I suppose. A bit like Batman Begins didn't plump for the obvious baddie and have the Joker.

Exactly, who outside of Batman fans would have heard of Ras Al Ghul or The Scarecrow??

To be fair the one thing that film did get right was Mean Machine Angel

Agree. And even though the film wasn't much cop, I actually liked Stallone as Dredd. And I wasn't arsed he took his helmet off.

But they only had him in there as a sort of cameo. I think if you're going to have the Angels at least make them a major part of the storyline. Fink was always my favourite anyway.

Dredd fans shouldn't get too excited by the new film. This is the lawmaster:

http://www.heyuguys.co.uk/2011/01/22...ows-lawmaster/

And this is the lawmaster compared with the Judge Minty fan film version (that is on the left):

This new Dredd film ain't exactly high budget 'stick to the source material' film making! And the film is set almost entirely in one block too. Zero scale to the story.

At least the Lawmaster might be able to do more than just go in a straight line this time.

Opinions from John Wagner

Well if they get across that each City Block holds around 60,000 people and contains most things you'd find in a town then that's a sense of scale all by itself.

If after a film spend travelling around this huge structure with thousands of people the last scene was then a pull back to show this is just one block amongst thousands, with block wars breaking out in each one, then that would work for me.

That would be a great closing scene
