First vet trip for my cats.......

Hi, as some of you may know i rescued my two from my OH's relatives, we are going on holiday this year and need to put them in a cattery for a week but i can't get a copy of their vet records from these relatives (long story) - she did say that they had had all their jabs before they came to me (unlikely, knowing what she was like with them) and they are pretty much indoor cats now anyways but what will the vet do in this case? No records of jabs etc - what treatments will they give them and how much do you think it will cost me?!

If you don't have records the vet will probably want to 'start again', i.e. rather than the annual booster the cat will have to have two jabs a month apart, like they do for their initial jabs when they are kittens.

By the way check with the cattery, because some like to see evidence of continuous vaccination so would want to see last year's vacc details too.

Why not use the original vet (assuming you can find out who it was)? They should have records.

I did this with my second cat, the first has always gone to another vet. She recognised him straight away although he did not want to go and was not pleased to see her.

Yeah had to do the same thing, get mine re vaccinated in order for the cattery to accept them, coz original owner had lost all the docs. I got them chipped too. Cost 100 euros each.

i cant do that i'm afraid, it would mean a 100mile round trip! they wouldnt be impressed with me or the poor vet! I'll have another go at her see what she says, they are microchipped - i dont suppose there'd be information on these chips about what they've had? or is that too easy?!?!

i think the microchips just identify the cat. As someone else said, your local vet will probably assume they are unvaccinated and give them a checckover at the same time.

Take them to your vet and ask them to scan for the microchips. If they find them, take the numbers and ring the chip people to change the address recorded with them. And if you can get chip numbers you might well be able to get the previous vet to send the records on - ring them after getting the cats scanned.

And no - the chips are just for identity, but if they are chipped it might ease getting their records.

Do this in good time before your hols - a new course is two injections 2 or 3 weeks apart.

my cat muffin loves going to the vet, i have never seen her so happy, she really loved the vet, she loved being weighed, she loved being prodded with, she loved the vet and the assistants making a fuss of her kittens....

My other cat has never been so horrified in his life, hates it with a passion.

This answers none of your questions, lol i just thought i would share this bit of useless info.

My cat absconded from somewhere in the neighbourhood and plonked herself on me. I had no idea whether she had jabs or not so the vet started from scratch.

This is the information from my cattery regarding vaccines, of course each one may vary slightly:

Primary Full Course
Completed over a period of 3 weeks.
Allowed to board 7 days after 2nd vaccine.

Booster Vaccine
Cats may board the same day, but preferably 2 days after vaccine.

You can always phone the original vet and ask for their record. You know the name and address of the previous owner so they will be easy to trace on their system.
It would also be helpful to the new vet to have these records transferred to them.
If thats not possible they will want to start again with the vaccinations.
I already had 2 cats but rescued a 5 year old cat last year. The vet she was under at that time had no record of vaccinations. She had only been under them for treatment she was currently receiving as she'd run away and came back with some bad injuries. The vet she was supposedly with before that couldn't trace her on their system. She hadn't been chipped either so I had her chipped and had her jabs done from scratch once I registered her with my own vet.

Poor thing had already had 2 owners and was on her way back to a rescue centre if I couldn't take her. She's very timid and I get the feeling she hasn't been treated too well in the past. She's the sweetest cat and she's doing great here with us. I was told she would run away the first chance she got near an open window but that hasn't happened. She loves to sit by an open window but hasn't once attempted to get out. I have a catflap for my other 2 so she isn't locked in. She just doesn't want to go out.
