Have you read "Testament to Youth"? It is a most savage indictment of the loss of life during The First World War. She is, of course, mother of Shirley Brittain who married B. A. O Williams philosophy tutor at Cambridge and who became Shirely Williams and later wife of an American after their divorce. Stewing will enjoy this posting.
