I have a Sony BDP-S350 blu-ray player that has never had its firmware upgraded in the couple of years that I have had it.

I have borrowed a long ethernet cable from work, so I can plug it in and do it - I am intending on doing it tomorrow.

Is it just a case of plugging it in, and then looking in the menu for an update option?

Yes assuming it's internet enabled. It's certainly the case with the S360.

The Sony customer website lists details, the 350 can be updated via the net, or via CD-ROM.

An ethernet connection is nice and simple, far easier than a CD-ROM.

I upgraded my 350 the day before yesterday - plugged in the ethernet cable, found the "update now" option in settings, and it took about 20 minutes. When everything's complete, the unit shuts down.
Cheers, Mike.

Is there anything worth upgrading for? I haven't got any Blu-rays that won't play though I certainly don't have an exhaustive collection.

Upgrades usually fix any bugs within the software or add new features.

For example, when I upgraded my BDP-S370 BBC iPlayer and Demand Five became available.

Not entirely sure to be honest

I think one early upgrade soon after the player was new did affect the playing of disks. But from what I've seen of more recent upgrades they only seem to affect all the interactive stuff and the bells and whistles that I don't really bother with personally.
