To peel or not to peel? that is my question.

My partner just popped an unpeeled raw mushroom (washed) in his gob.

I'm a peeler,

Just brush the bits of soil off. Washing makes them soggy. I love raw button mushrooms. Slice and sprinkle with lemon juice.

Cultivated mushrooms are grown in sterile 'soil' so no worries

I always thought that and nearly every chef food program says the same but on Nigel Slater's New Year program he put extra water in with his mushrooms as he said it helps them soak up the flavour.
I suppose it depends on what and how your cooking them.

That's all you need.

Couldn`t be bothered peeling, although I have in the past...the big ones anyway

I now only get the button ones, which would take forever and I don`t think there`s much need with those....

What I can tell you is that I had an earwig come flying out from a mushroom once, I always thought they were grown in large sterile warehouses....it nearly put me off for life as it was already tossed into the pan at the time...

needless to say, the whole lot went in the bin. It`s never happened since thankfully.

What a waste.

I suggest you don't grow your own fruit and veg or you wouldn't eat any of it.

You shouldn't peel them, why would you?

Most can be just wiped but some require a good wash.

HWF would make a meal out of it. I remember him cooking up wood lice once

I'd never dream of peeling a mushroom! I didn't know people did, it certainly never occurred to me. I eat them raw all the time, and chop them raw in salads.

I never peel. Don't see the point. Don't wash them or wipe them either, just remove any bits of mud or whatever clinging to them.

I also once put some mushrooms in a pan and had a large insect flew out. Well shit me up it did! And I couldn't face eating them after that.

As a side note, Nigel Slater said that the best time to eat mushrooms, when they have the most flavour is when they're a few days old and have started to feel a bit 'tacky' to the touch.
