I recently recovered from man flu/a cold... or whatever I had. I didn't have a fever but felt light headed, had a terrible cough and a constant stream of mucus in my nose and throat which was more green than anything else.

However, today I blew my nose (a lot) and it was bright yellow. Not just a tint but bright, as if someone had coloured it in with a yellow highlighter pen. A quick Google suggests it's my body fighting off infection but I'm pretty much over it now, with the exception of a little bit of mucus now and again.

I take vitamin tablets which contain a lot of vitamin B and often get really bright yellow piss because of that (this is perfectly normal). I didn't take them much when I was ill because I was taking man flu medication but I started taking them again recently. I was wondering if the same thing has happened with the mucus?

You have had what is known as a cold. Yellow stuff coming out your nose - that's sounds about right for a head cold, Some may call it catarrh. You will not die, in fact you can get off the sofa right now and stop feeling sorry for yourself and get back to work. Your colleagues are missing you, they have had to do your share as well as there own.

I've had it before and it's never been as yellow as it was. It's almost fluorescent. Incidentally, I just blew my nose and it's back to the greeny colour. I was just wondering if the excess B vitamins can come out in the mucus, like they normally do with urine.

And thanks for the patronising, but for your information I never took any time off work.

And if it carries, on, go to the chemist and ask for a salt water nose wash, lovely stuff, gets rid of all the crap in a day.

My own experience it that when the yellow stuff comes out of your nose (sorry to be so graphic!) that's the end of the cough or cold, so you should now get better very quickly.

Hope this doesn;t sound patronising, I don't mean to be.............

Green stuff usually means there's bacteria in the catarrh.
Yellow or clear is just normal body fighting it off stuff towards the back end of the cold.

If it's nasal - then your nasal passages and sinuses are inflamed [you know all this really]

so to ease the discomfort and help reduce the inflammation get yourself a bottle of Lavender oil from Holland & Barratt or somewhere, it's a natural anti inflammatory.
Sniff drops on your hanky and it will help reduce the inflammation and it will also help get rid of the catarrh.
And invest in an electric steamer, and drop a wee bit of the Lavender in the water and inhale the steam. It's a great help in breaking down catarrh.

If it's in your throat/chest - get cider apple vinegar.
Put a teaspoon of the vinegar in a teaspoon of lukewarm water, gargle and swallow. Yes it tastes horrid but it works.

Gargle with 50%cider apple vinegar/50% water once an hour.

Make sure you rinse your mouth round with water and spit the water out after though.
The rinsing with water protects your tooth enamel from the vinegar but swallowing the vinegar mix first will clear that throat catarrh like magic.

Ok next day you will cough out something which looks like a squashed frog, but - that's what you want - the yucky stuff out.

chitarivera, the patronising comment was in relation to rjb101 assuming I took time off work. I wasn't feeling ill, I just had an awful cough, mucus and often got light headed.

I actually have some lavender oil somewhere. I've been steaming my face with Olbas Oil and that works temporarily. It's not as bad now. I can breathe and sleep properly, but it's just a little niggle I'm having and I getting fed up of clearing my nose I'll try the lavender, cheers.

The reason I asked the question is because it's the brightest yellow I have ever seen come from my body, but it's not there any more, which is why I as wondering if it was the vitamin tablets causing it temporarily.

Olbas is nice for clearing airways temporarily, but the Lavender seems to be better and fetching the crap out altogether and bringing the inflammation down.

As far as I know any yellow or green [whatever shade] mucus is just bacteria.

But I guess if you have ingested something with colouring in it, maybe that could affect the colour but I'd be more inclined to think any colour change would be in your pee rather than what comes out of your nose.

I'm guessing there was still some nasty bacteria lurking while it was yellow.

I'm not a doctor, Ive just had a lot of colds! And now Ive learned from experience how to clear them!

Hope it helps.

It probably is just bacteria, but I had the same question when I started taking the vitamin tablets but it was about my florescent urine!

Well, I guess if you take those vits again after the cold is gone and you pee yellow, you will have your answer.

Oh, my urine is always yellow shortly after taking these vitamin tablets. They have something silly like 200% of the RDA of some of the B vitamins, so you just piss them out when they're not needed

When I had a sinus infection my doctor told me to get a deep dish put a mild salt water solution in it and snort the liquid up my nose one nostril at a time and the snort it out, now that did work very me and brought all sorts of evil crud out.

I think it is the vitamin tablets causing it to be bright yellow because the same thing happened today, but the colour of any mucus is clear or slightly green (very feint) again. I took a vitamin tablet about 3 hours before I blew my nose

Throw them there vitamins away. They must have bacteria in them.

Or, keep taking the vits and eat as much beetroot as you can just to see if your wee will turn orange.

Seriously, I hope you feel better soon.

Oh, I feel fine. Throughout this illness I haven't felt ill, just bunged up and a horrible cough (which is pretty much gone now)

Vitamin B turns yellow when it's excreted (via urine ) so I am assuming it's the same thing but coming out in the mucus. When I fist had a piss and it was florescent yellow I was really scared but it happens when you take vitamin tablets with high doses of vitamin B.
