I guess it depends on what part of their genetic memories are intact.
Dunno if you know this (so excuse me if I'm teaching you to suck eggs) but the reason that animals roll in crap is that back when they were wild they would roll in crap so in order to mask their own scent and make it easier to hunt a prey animal.
If you want to hunt sheep, for example, you roll in sheep-shit and then none of the sheep will be able to smell a mountain-lion stalking them.
My cat, Benny, was half-persian so he had a beautiful coat and he did a great job of keeping himself clean but he was also a hunter and, as a result, he'd often wander into the house smeared in various things.
I'm sure he would have gotten himself clean eventually but it was often hard to stomach the smell.
He used to climb in through the kitchen window and then stand in the kitchen doorway moaning as if to say "Okay, I'm a mess. I know you're gonna wash me and that's not gonna be fun for either of us so just get on with it".
