Who really are the most popular artists
I sometimes check out the last.fm top 400 monthly world play count.I truely think that this list is the best list that I think that reflects present popularity of artists.I often wonder some of the artists that lay just outside this list also though.I did some googling & found that someone had done some research into the overall play count of artists of artists since last.fm started. This may not be a totally accurate list (there are probably some omissions & repeat entrees - read comments below) & is a year or so out of date. The list does go against who is perceived to be popular against who exactly is popular though. Some fans of certain artists may have different listening habits & may have a low showing on the list also - it does give alot of indications to my mind though.
Alot of recent pop artist are not on this list because they haven't been around long enough to get a high play count. It is a good comparison for more established pop artists though. http://www.last.fm/user/Egg21/journa...for_play_count. Compare this to the months play count artists as well if you like http://www.last.fm/charts/artist |

Not quite sure how Last fm works but it certainly is an interesting (and close to my own personal taste) chart. I think it probably just proves that the people who use that service are completely different and probably a little older (and wiser?
) than those buying their music online or in the shops at the moment. An individual track chart would be very interesting also.

Just found this official list compiled by last.fm themselves. This is broken down tag by tag though http://www.last.fm/bestof/2010/tags |

Once again proof, as if it were needed, that rock music continues to thrive, and that Metallica are one of the most popular bands in the world.

It is interesting I think a lot self proclaimed "Biggest band in the world" really arent in terms of actual CHOSEN play. By that I mean what people have put on themselves rather than whats force fed

It's actually pretty amazing that the most listened to artist in the past week is one that split up over 40 years ago. The next highest inactive band is Nirvana at no. 13. We also have Pink Floyd, Queen, Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin, Oasis and The Smiths in the top 50. Justin Bieber and Cheryl Cole barely enter the top 400.
Would be interesting to find out the demographics of people that scrobble using Last.FM. I've found it to be relatively balanced but that's just through the odd profile I've looked it while I've been scrobbling myself. |
