Doing cupboard clearance last night and found some old filter coffee so decided to dig out the filter machine which i knew hadnt been used for a least three years. Made the coffee expecting it to be horrible and it was fine., Then realised the use by date was 1999 !!!

That started me on the hunt at the back of the deserts cupboard and found some old blanmange mixes from tesco from 1994 ! Dont think I;ll risk them though

Anyone found or indeed eaten anything that old or made themselves ill through eating something well beyond its use by date?

When was the last time you cleaned your cupboards out

I clean mine every month and check all the use by dates on the food before I put them back in. No old food in mine

A packet of angel delight about a year out of date.

I think I have some prehistoric herbs which just taste of dust. Not harmful though. I have a bag of muscavado? sugar that is solid. Again, not dangerous. Who has time, energy and often limbo dancing practice to get to look at the items lurking at the back of the cupboard?

I found a container of Green and Black's cocoa in my cupbaord the other day and had some. The best before date on it is 2005. I didn't even live here in 2005, so I must have brought it with me when I moved house.

Nowt wrong with it and it tastes lovely. I've had a cup of it every night for the past fortnight and I'm not dead yet.

Found a can of tinned fruit about 10 years old a few months ago. Tasted fine.

The rosemary is still ok. Being a pungent herb to start with it still has a rosemary smell and taste.

I'm going to be more heavy handed with the old dried herbs to use them up. When I get the BBQ going I think I will chuck handfuls on the charcoal. Oooh can't wait for spring and a bit of outdoor cooking and dining.

I've got a couple of tubes of harissa in the cupboard which I think I bought 20 years ago from a garage in Brentford close to Kew Bridge. I was walking past and saw some boxes so went in and bought 24 tubes (a box full). I think these last two got stuck at the back and only surfaced after a recent house move.

It's because we got a new spice rack which is filled with upto date spices. The old were stuck in the cupboard and just left there.

I don't know why they weren't thrown out at the time. Just one of those things where you think they might come in handy and then you never get around to doing it.

I have accumulated so many little packets of different spices and sauces for different cuisines preseved lemons, asafoetida, preseved ginger etc Its very easy to find ancient wonders at the back of the cupboard.

Ah that makes sense. We've had a spice rack bought with spices in and it feel like they can't be wasted.

The last time I did a cupboard clearance was probably in June last year. I found things that expired in 1994. The freezer was worse - had meaty things and fish fingers that had turned into ice cubes that expired in 1995!
