Most Reliable Replacement HDR Drive (2Tb)
I've decided to replace my Foxsat HDR Hardrive.
I'm looking for the most reliable, suitable, high-capacity, drive available. The drive I've identified is the Western Digital REII-GP 2TB. I choose this based on the specification of 1.2million hours MTBF (mean (average) time between failures). Anyone know why this mightn't work, or have a better alternative? Thanks. |

You need one specified for AV (Audio Visual) or CE (Consumer Electronics) that don'y have the error checking routines of drives for PC use. You do know that drives larger than 1 TB are not a straight swap, and that accessing a media list of over 1TB takes a while ?

As I understand it, this drive is suitable for PVR's, it is designed for commercial grade surveillance systems and data centres. However, it is intended for RAID systems and I simply don't know how it will operate on a standalone basis, or if suitable, whether it will be more reliable in this scenario than the Western Digital AV-GP 2TB. What I am hypothesising is that the time-limited error recovery (TLER) functionality will improve the reliability while avoiding the problems associated with standard error correction. However, I simply don't know enough about hardrive configurations to be sure my interpretation is correct - hence this post. ![]() I am well aware that the drive will have to be formatted externally and that the response from the media list will be slow. |
