UPNP software they used Twonky seems to be about 15 Euros.

Whilst it works, I'd caution against too much enthusiasm just yet.

Twonky takes virtually all the free RAM on the HDR when it runs, I have a feeling that that may well have a negative impact on the rest of the HDR functions to operate normally.

Besides if you use something like Media Player Classic or the VLC player you can stream a program using the ftp protocol just by entering the full ftp url. This doesn't require any extra software besides the ftp server on the HDR.

The HDR has 128MB of RAM, and with the telnet and ftp daemons enabled it has about 2MB of free RAM.

/proc/meminfo shows 2.8Mb free and 11 Mb in "buffers" which I believe I read someplace was effectively free. Twonky web page reporting usage of 34 kb and a ps -w showing "vmsize" (virtual memory size ?) of twonky processes is trivial compared to the zillions of "settop" processes. Doesn't seem to grab extra when actively streaming.

Seems like a real goer so far, streaming to AC Ryan Playon HD mini media streamer fantastic. We do need to get it started automatically on boot though !!

The same Twonky software also runs on my lowly NAS device, it is specifically designed to run on low end embedded devices.

Compiling Mediatomb it is not what I call straighforward!

Mediatomb seems to have a good name for itself and we only want basic functions (extras like transcoding and internet radio aren't going to be useful), so would be great if it could be added in as a freebie. I'll be happy to pay the £13.68 for the twonky license otherwise.

I've successfully got a cross-compiler toolchain set up now on one of my Debian boxes.

Turned out to be pretty painless using buildroot http://buildroot.uclibc.org/

download, untar then run make menuconfig

install any missing utility packages you need and then in the config, set mIps as the target architechture with mip32 as the subtype.

Then 'make' and leave it for an hour or two...

So far just compiled a small test program to make sure that the toolchain works and it does

Anyone know if its possible to rmount a (linux) NAS folder onto the HDR? If I could do this I too would be over the moon...

I could have Twonky serve all the HDR content and my NAS (avi's and mp3's) from the one media server

I don't think we'll see that happen, just buy a network media stramer that can go on top of your NAS fileshare and the UPNP Twonky - AC Ryan PlayOn HD Mini is a GREAT choice.

Got that kit too! Its fun, but not happy at playlist limitations and ver 2 is about to launch...

But more importantly, spent sometime trying to remote mount from linux pc onto humax, it will rbind a directory, but I cant get mount to work either with cifs or nfs just get syntax errors... So why is it not possible?
