There is a new comedy Sadie J on Fridays on CBBC at 5.30pm

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00xyh19/Sadie_J_Robobootylicious/

In it there is a boy called "Kit" who is suggested will come out as Gay.

He acts and sounds very feminine, exfoliates, and lurves JLS.

I dont think this is appropriate in childrens programmes.

Also, whats with the current wave of female orientated shows on CBBC. Tracy Beaker, Sadie J, Sarah Jane, Jinx, Dani's House.

No doubt someone from the PC brigade will accuse me of homophobia.

Yes, wholly inappropriate to subject children to watch things that happen in the real world.

You outline some general themes there that you are intimating objection to, but could you tell us exactly what you do not consider appropriate?

I don't think you're homophobic, just uneducated and ignorant.

Why should there not be a gay character? Funny you didn't actually highlight any reason why it's inappropriate, just 'because'.

Seems abit weird for a kids tv programm :S. I think 13 is too young to reach a definite conclusion about one's sexuality.

No offence but, are you gay?

I realised when I was younger than 13 as I'm sure most gay people do.

A rather nasty stereotype. Not all gay men are as you suggest.

It is good for teenagers to discover there are other gay teens about who may or may not act like them.

Get over it. I know a few people who were like the character he portrays at 13.

People realise much earlier than that.

It would have been fine in a teen drama like Grange Hill etc

But in a comedy aimed a 8-12 yr olds.

why do they even need to think about sexuality at that age. Or be made to feel "uncomfortable"

You can begin to realise at 8/9.

The description I gave was of the character in the comedy.

    I didnt stereotype anyone.

It's just a gay character. End. There is no discussion about sex in the show, so what's the problem?

    Stupid thread is stupid.

Who gives a shit? No doubt someone people here will create a topic about him and another character and 'wait for them to get it on'.

Because like it or not children are starting to think about 'boys' or 'girls' from around this time. It might offer that child struggling with their sexuality that crumb of comfort when they see the feelings they're having aren't wrong.

I have more of an issue with the fact anyone would call their son 'Kit', what a horrendous name.

    same.
Jumping on the glee bandwagon imo.

Gay people only have in common that they like the same sex.
(although some do act feminine and that's fine) this is a faux PC message written for homophobes that 'accept the weird fruity kids' that backfires, even though their intentions are probably good.
I'd rather the message was for gay kids telling them they were normal individuals and not a stereotype defined by their sexuality.
Kids shouldn't be introduced to stereotypes as accurate or for comic effect. Bad message.

It does seem innapropriate to me that a 13 year old's sexuality is even mentioned in a children's program regardless of what it is.

It is short for Christopher. A friend of mine calls Christopher Eccleston "Kit Eccles".

I don't think so. I think we should be more open about sex in this country. It might do us some good. The Dutch are very open and don't have half the 'sex-related' problems with their teenagers that we do!

Agreed. Just the silly cotton-wool wrappers who don't have a clue.

Absolutely disgusting, I'll complain and I would encourage every other parent to do the same.

I do not want my kids to be exposed to JLS.

The gay thing I'm fine with.

Totally ridiculous and pig-headed to suggest that there's anything wrong with gay characters being portrayed on children's TV. The OP needs to get their priorities sorted.

...I'm more annoyed that the character's a JLS fan. Atrocious band.

[NB: To the OP, yes, you will get called a homophobe. That's because objecting to the representation of gay people is homophobic. Though I do quite like that you dismiss the notion as though that's the kneejerk here.]
