Are phone cases and screen protectors becoming obsolete?

With more phones adopting metal bodies and toughened glass screens, do we really need the inconvenience of using a case which will reduce functionality? Having tried various cases for my N8 and finding that most of the shops try to rip you off, charging £20 plus for the simplest of designs, I’ve come to the conclusion that they’re not worth not it for me. Having a water damaged iPod to test I took a screwdriver to the screen and realised just how difficult it was to make any sort of scratch on the screen, same goes for the anodised aluminium body.

Lend me your phone and after a day's normal use by me you won't want it back.

Phones do scratch over time, and of course you need to use a bumper case with an iPhone or you can drop your signal due to poor antenna design by Apple.

I've been the opposite, never used to buy cases but now I do, would cost £400 to replace my phone so worth spending a little on a case and screen protector, my current case is an otterbox and well worth the money.

There's loads of cases and screen protectors on to be had via the internet. Far better to protect your smartphone.

Mine cost £6 off the market. At that price I had no qualms about punching an extra hole in the screen flap so I could see the message alert light which none of the (some very expensive) covers I looked at seem to have considered as being a useful thing to be able to do.

When new I had the case for my iPhone especially in the work environment I was in. It's been without a case now for a year and is as good as new....I suppose if you are stupid enough to keep your phone in a pocket with keys or loose change then a case is a must. Otherwise not really necessary for day to day use.
I always removed the case for evening use anyway....

The best is Invisible Shield - they cost about £18 on ebay and cover the whole handset in a clear film which is only about 2mm thick but won't scratch no matter what you do. Just to show my friends I've run a rusty nail over my phone's screen numerous times and it hasn't left a mark.

After I dropped my iphone (no damage thankfully), I went straight out and bought a leather case for it.

Love my new case for the Orange San Francisco. It has been long in coming but it makes the phone look better as well as protecting it. For me a case and screen protector are a must.

I was quite surprised that my new Blackberry I bought last week (Bold 9780) came with a case - it's fantastic actually, even has a magnet in it which "wakes" the phone up when you take it out of the case automatically. It is also made so that you can still see the notification light for any missed calls/texts can be clearly seen when in the case.

I spent £350 on this phone last week, so keeping it in the case is a must for me. I think on some phones they can seem a little "old hat" but I do think on an expensive phone, a case is perhaps more relevant than ever.

£18 on eBay? Why not buy it from a reputable e-tailor for less?

In my experience, they have the full body protector and screen protectors up for most new phones before they're even released!

I think even though phones are being made out of tougher materials, they're also costing more and more and playing a bigger part in our lives, so paying a few quid to protect it against scratch damage or dropping it from a few feet is definitely worth it.

Also protects the screen.

I shipped out hundreds of the older BBs on a corporate roll out years back. With notes saying "PLEASE USE THE CASE".

We weren't really surprised when a few started coming back with cracked screens with notes saying "honestly, it was kept in the case".

Yah, sure.

Yeah, everyone that has accidentally put their phone in a pocket with something else is clearly just stupid They never just forget because they're busy or in a rush or simply don't realise there is anything else in there.

Invisible Shield is HORRIBLE! i had mine installed by some ZAGG guy at CPW and after letting it set for a week or so (what he said) it still looked horrible and gained the "Orange Peal Effect" plus is ruins the screen on the iPhone 4

i would go with a SGP or Power Support full body protector
