Do the midweek chart updates work against artists?

I was just wondering because for example, midweek, Adele was number 1 and upon seeing this the Bruno Mars fans could've bought loads to get him to number 1 this week.

Could they?

And do they?

They probably do, especially when it's so close. Most people will probably not care or even know about the midweeks, though.

I doubt that was the case this week. Adele never overtook Bruno Mars on iTunes, and on Tuesday her lead was only 254 copies, so it was inevitable Bruno would end up at no.1 by today, midweek chart updates or not.
