Following some stuff on the avforums from mogie...

1) Enable FTP & Telnet (on foxsat) --> http://bit.ly/hZfs5w

2) Install Twonkymedia (on foxsat) ---> http://bit.ly/dNRp5b

3) Install XBMC on any pc ---> http://xbmc.org

4) Install on pc (quick twonky restart) ---> http://bit.ly/esHgpt

once done, you should now be able to watch all your recordings through XBMC from your Humax (without waiting)

should look like this

all in folder order just like if you were using your humax.

How does this help you play an AVI or MKV file on the HDR?

Or is it just a browser for playing files off the PC which can be done by running an HDMI cable from the PC to TC like I have.

Just installed xbmc onto my Ipad - works on there too !

My brother came round to have a look, then phoned sky cancelled his subscription and went to currys for a foxsat !

So is twonkymedia a paid for product? what happens after the 30-day trial?

not sure i'll find out tomorrow see if ticks down a day, its only £13 quid to buy though worth the money.

I don't know if it's still the case, but when I used Twonky (version 5.something) on my old NAS box, the trial countdown reset itself whenever the box was restarted.

I just wanted to post back and say thank you so much for this, I have been using boxee to watch the video files back via the twonky media server and it works a treet!

This is just amazing! wouldn't it be nice if Bobcat and the team from Humax bundled this by default in the next firmware release now that we have proven it can run reliably and without interfering with the behaviour of the box.

The foxsat HDR is now truly an amazing device!

Mrmarky thank you for this information. So far I have enabled FTP and Telnet using the suggested file. A 30 minute programme has so far taken 2 hours 13 minutes to FTP from the Humax to PC using FileZilla, is this the best it will achieve or are there settings I need to change? Thank you for this info though and I will carry out the rest of the installation and try streaming.

Are you grabbing this through a wireless netowrk ?

Wired is usually prefered as it only takes around 3 or 4 minutes to transfer on a 30 min program, wireless should be a little longer but i'm puzzed to 2hrs should be much less.

Is it in HD ?

No its wired and sd - thought it was taking a long time compared to transfer to a usb stick.

Hello again, just found that speed limits were set in FileZilla so have changed them to 0 and its working fast now - thanks for your help though.

How do you do that, is it an app or a complete os?

I have been working away for the last 3 weeks but have been keeping up with what's been happening on here and avforums and I'd just like to say thank you to everyone involved. The her is a great piece of equipment, With the extras that are now possible it is fantastic!

Unfortunately now I'm home I have no pc here to try anything, so I'll have to wait until the weekend when I can get my laptop.

Ah just found xbmc and you need to unlocked your iPad and installed cydia.

I'll see if there are any apps that can browse dnla equipment and also stream .ts mpeg 2s before I try that I think

Yes, an out-of-the-box solution would be fantastic. (I would love to have the functionality but just too much effort all round to be bothered.) Maybe for HDR2 and IPAD2??

I take back the above, after reading the latest work on the AVF. I'll wait for the next Humax Release and then install a modified firmware. I still can see myself jailbreaking my IPAD, though.

Good News is that Twonky stops on 30 days (Either way I would still be happy to pay the £13)

I love the xbmc app on the ipad very quick and excellent quality - shame its not actually in the App Store not sure why apple won't allow it.

I can't quite see them giving you access to the filesystem for people to mess up their box. Also any new functionality means extra effort and £ to support especially for the less technical user so don't hold you breath. I prefer community efforts myself as you often get so much more than a company offers, just look at xbmc.

I've just posted this over on avforums but I thought I would report over here so people on ds can see my experience with my modded HDR and trying to stream with various devices around my house

After being away for a few week but closely following this forum, when I got back yesterday I was very keen to have a go at getting twonky up and running, and with relative ease it is now working. So a big thank you to all involved.

Now the only I thing I can add is my experience of trying to get the .ts file running on various dnla equipment.

1/ ps3. Works fine on all sd files. I have tried on a couple of BBC one hd files and it hasn't worked.

2/panasonic tv (I have 42v10b which is a 2009 model I think. Unfortunately neither sd or hd .ts files play

3/ xbox360. again nothing plays as it doesn't support .ts files.

4/ iPad / iPhone 4. Using the app air player both devices will play all sd files, although I seem to get a significant amount of dropped frames, I presume this isn't a wireless bandwidth problem but the air player decoder making use of the gpu and struggling to decode 25fps.

From a personal point of view I will just by a cheap network streamer off eBay and hopefully this will enable be to have access to all my recordings on my tv in my bedroom. So again many thanks

Would Busy Box be an alternative to Twonkymedia?

I used something similar on the Emprex ME1 media drive.

busybox is the Linux operating system that the HDR runs isn't it ? Twonky runs as an application on top - an open source alternative has been suggested but twonky works for now.

Oh right, what about Samba is that the same as Twonky?

A couple of questions?
With this change to my HDR will I be able to stream from my PC to my HDR and display on the TV?
I currently have Twonkymedia installed on my PC and can stream video.avi files to the the TV via media server on a 50 " 2010 Panasonic TV, but would like to use the lovefilm "video on demand" service without having to use a cable.
And finally will this enable me to use Twonkybeam to view internet content on my TV?

Basically your Humax box becomes a media server - all the media on that box can be streamed to any device.

I have a 2009 panasonic tv and it doesn't play the file format served by the hdr (.ts). But I supposed the newer models may have sorted this...


Twonky is just a dnla platform so any dnla certified device should be able to see all the media on the HDR. This doesn't necessarily mean the dnla certified device can play the files correctly.

Samba is a full file and print platform, so slightly different, but maybe able to be added to hdr in the future.
