3 Year old Yorkie.

Hello everyone, I don't venture in here much. We have 2 Yorkshire Terrier brothers (aged 3years and 2 months) who we've had since 8 weeks.

On Sunday the smaller, Dylan, started vomiting, this continued in to Monday and he didn't eat that day either, we figured to leave it for 24 hours as long as he was drinking enough as tummy bugs come and go like that. But Tuesday AM he was just as bad, still being sick and not eating so we took him to the vets where they have run bloodwork, put him on a fluid IV and kept him overnight and he's still showing no interest in food (they have stopped the vomit with an injection).

He's being x-rayed this morning to see if he has a blockage of any kind.

I am going to include a vomit description so fainter eyes shouldn't read ahead...

Spoiler
It was very watery/phlegmy with only traces of food in, assumedly because he couldn't have had any food left.

Has anyone had a dog with this problem before? We are very worried, especially as this has now run for about 60 hours.

I'm so sorry you are having this problem poor little Dylan must be feeling very poorly I do think he is in the right place and your vet is doing exactly the right things. If it is any help dogs do get sick very quickly but tend to get better even faster and I learned years ago never give up hope because they can come back from these things and you may never even know why it happened.

Only time we had something similar was years ago and it was a blockage. The dog had got in the compost heap unbeknownst to my dad, and got out a sweetcorn (core? not sure what you call em). He had an op and made a full recovery.

We have just heard from the vet again. It isn't a blockage, but his tummy is slightly inflamed so they think it is some sort of gastro issue. He's apparently a little perkier now than he was earlier and the plan for the time being is to just keep him in and keep him on fluids and try to encourage him to eat from time to time, and once he eats something and keeps it down he should be okay to come home.

Our other dog, Dylan's brother Boris, was sick in the night, but it was food based, and has had a bit of a squidgy bum. We told the vet this morning and they said just to starve him for the time being and see what happens. Hopefully it's nothing as serious as Dylan, but as you can probably tell/understand it's got us fretting like mad.

Well that's good news that it isn't a blockage - hopefully he's on the mend now!

We still have a little while to hear about Dylan again but thought I'd let you know that Boris has been to the vet as he threw up a little yellow froth this afternoon. We have been told to continue not feeding him, but have been given a powder to dissolve in water to give to him overnight, if he keeps that down then we can think about small amounts of food tomorrow.

Making him drink the liquid is quite difficult though despite the syringe we've been given to help.

Fingers crossed for your two little men, hope they will be okay. Is it possible they could've had access to any type of poison? I so hope not, and it's just a tummy bug which they both caught. x

Okay, just another update. Boris has to be taken in last night because he was clearly unwell and we were advised to be safe rather than sorry with him and just get him in on fluids to prevent him from crashing as quickly as Dylan. Overnight, Dylan has apparently had a little bit of food which he has held down successfully and his mood seems to be getting better by the hour, so we are allowed to bring him home this morning, though Boris does have to stay at least until this evening (though in all likelihood he'll be there until tomorrow).

They have said that the only thing it really could be is Gastroenteritis, though quite a powerful version. The vet said there's been a couple of strong variations that seem to be on the rounds at the minute.

Dylan is home and doing well, he is playful, attentive and has eaten and taken his antibiotics with no problems.

Boris is still at the vets, and is staying over night, they are just waiting for a solid stool and then he'll have the clearance to come back too.

We've had dogs with tummy bugs before, but nothing that has been as powerful or long lasting as this.
