Take a look at the soaps in 2001 and then in 2011- which have improved? Which have worsened, which were better ten years ago and which are now?

I think Neighbours has improved a lot in ten years (despite its ups and downs and how bad it was 2/3 years ago)

EastEnders has gotten worse. Corrie has improved. And Emmerdale has gotten worse.

I'll talk EEwise as that's the only one I remember ten years ago. IMO EE has got worse when you compare it to 2001 BUT to be fair 2001 is like ONE of the best years in EE history in my opinions. The writing, pacing, continuity, community feel was BANG on. You had an amazing mix of characters and families then you had Sharon's return, who shot phil, Kat/Zoe reveal and Little Mo & Trevor abuse just to name a few storylines.

If talking generally about the quality of the last ten years, IMO it's not as good as it was 01, 02, 03, 05, 08, or 09. I enjoyed it alot more back then.

Can't comment on the quality but remember Neighbours got around 10 million viewers at the turn of the Millennium which would now be a good figure for the big two.

Don't know why you think Corrie has improved. I never watched it in 2001 but given that Corrie had a golden age from about 02-05 it couldn't have been that bad in 01 surely?

EE was obviously much better in 01 than 2011.... but then that has been the case for just about every year after 2001, so no real surprises. 2011 is not really any different to any of the other 00s years in that sense as none of them are really as good. The only comparable years would probably be 02, 03, 05, 07, and most people would still place 01 ahead.

As Lauren said, 2001 is a high point for EE. You have to go back to 1994 to find a better year.

2001 was considered a very bad year for Corrie as it got a lot of criticism for abandoning its traditional storytelling in favour of sensationalised, gritty plots.

EE was at its very best between 1986-1989 with Den and Angie, The Beales and Fowlers, etc.

I agree 2001 was a good year. You had Little Mo and and Trevor. Kat and Zoe's storyline, Sharon's return and Who Shot Phil. It was definalty EastEnders at its best!

I also think 1994- 1998 were good years. Sharongate, Tiffany and Grant. Cindy shooting Ian and then going on the run in Italy. Bianca and Ricky. Kathy's departure. Were all great storylines.

Imo EastEnders is the shadow of its former self.

I am surprised people found Corrie dramatic at that point as I found it the most boring period of Corrie I'd seen since I began been watching in the early 90's.

2000 was good with the factory seige. Emma and Curly's wedding and the live episode. We also got a trip to France that year. And 2002 was dramatic with tricky Richard Hillman's reign of terror but 2001 wasnt so good in my memory.

I can say with a total confidence you are 150% right! In 2001 Hollyoaks was fun and light hearted and character based. Plus realistic.

Now I dont watch it, havent done since 2003. But I see the odd epi here and there and I think now its apauling!! Very bad. Badly written, less character based and things just happen because they are dramatic not because they are right for the character or the story.

EastEnders is aout the same. 97 - 2002 were it's height of fame.

Emmerdale has improved tons.

Coronation Street, out oif these listed, is the one that has taken a majoir fall back in my opinion.

EastEnders - worse since early 2010

Corrie - I'd say about the same

Hollyoaks - worse since about 2008

Emmerdale - better since 2009

Neighbours - been worse since 2008 but slowly getting better

Home & Away - worse since around 2007

I actually think H&A is better now than in 2001. Granted, it's not as good as the 2005-2008 ere but there is a real sense of nostalgia now with Marilyn, Roo and Morag back in the Bay. I also think, with the exception of a few dodgy teens that there is an excellant cast at the moment with some really established actors on the show.

Hollyoaks has gone majorly downhill, Coronation Street imo has got better acting wise but the storylines back then were great.

Well, that's incorrect in a few ways (such as 97/98 being troublesome years for EE); but by any measure the height of the show's fame was the 80s. Nothing has ever matched those years in terms of public profile, impact, and "fame". Not even remotely.

A Country Practice and All Saints star Georgie Parker is a great actress.
