WAP Phones

Has anyone here got a WAP phone? Or at least know someone with one?

Is so what is it like? Do you use it a lot? Is it expensive?

It's just I got an email from Genie Internet trying to give me one free or a top of the range one for 1/2 price!
I want to wait until July though as Sony are launching a gorgeous flip one!

I had a Cellnet Trium Geo wap phone that took hours to dial up just to look at TV listings or weather forecasts lol

Knew this thread would take off after 14 years.

National Rail still have a proper wap site that works at http://wap.nationalrail.co.uk but it's a bit too sophisticated for modern phones...had to dig out the N70 (which is still a bit too modern) to see it.

I remember the genie wap site. Wasn't the Cellnet dial up number 915000 or something like that? 10p a minute

Always found the National Rail WAP site really useful - for example you could (and still can) bookmark the live departure boards for specific stations.

The national rail application tells you where your train is, tracked by GPS though

along with all the details of departures for your chosen station. I think it even detects the location of the station you're at by GPS. Why would you want to load a WAP site to do what the app does a million times better?

If you were on BT Genie you could get unlimited wap access back in those days, and it really was unlimited.

I remember being rather excited at being able to access the internet on my 3510i

Though it was rather disappointing considering there was literally nothing you could do with it.

Don't understand why resurrecting old threads is frowned on so much in these forums. Does it have a legacy in usenet conventions/protocols or something similar?

It can be very informative from a historical POV - in this case showing how far phone tech has come.

Depends what they bring back I think. This one's fun but often people bring back an old thread to answer a question that no one is interested in anymroe.

There are still a lot of WAP sites around, when I had a Lumia 920 at launch some mobile sites wouldn't detect the phone properly and would redirect to a WAP version of the site.
