I charged the phone from early evening yesterday to 7am this morning, that's at least 14 hours.

It's dying already, it's given me 2 warnings and I've hardly been on in it today!

Make sure you have done an over the air (OTA) update before using the phone - as this is quite important!

Either your battery is faulty or you need to configure your phone.

Check phone configuration as below...

Go into "Settings", select "About phone", then "Battery" and finally "Battery use".

Your stats will indicate whats eating your battery, for reference:

Android OS should be around 2%
Android System should be around 3%
Display should be around 60%
Phone idle should be around 15%
Cell standby should be around 18%

Any other stats are the ones for applications that are draining your battery. Hope that helps.

Thanks for typing all that info.

These are the stats and I've literally just taken it off charger since I last posted...

Display 86%
Android System 12%
Cell Standby 2%

Is that any good?

What apps are you running?
Have you done the OTA update?

Your display stat indicates you can turn the screen brightness down quite a bit.
Android OS means it doing quite a bit of work. Battery eaters are things like:
Live wallpapers
Ebay
Facebook!!
Sky News!!
Skype!!
GPRS
etc

You need to callibrate your apps or your battery will get eaten.

The Desire HD doesn't have that good battery life in the first place. So don't expect miracles!

But careful management of your Android apps should improve things a bit. If you're using it a lot though, the battery will go down pretty quickly, and there's not much you can do about it, really, other than charge the thing.

you need to go throught the charge, discharge cycle a few times before the battery settles down.

Your display has used most of the power. The screen must have been on for quite a while to use that much battery.

What's an OTA update?

I have FB, Sky News apps but they're not running unless I launch them surely.

I'm all confused

No it wasn't, the display goes into a blank screen after 10 secs if I'm not using it.

OTA is over the air. The phone will download updates to the android OS directly without the need to connect a PC

It's somewhere in settings

Lol - yeah that why so many people complain about the battery. All the applications that consume data will stay running until you tell them to stop. In the main they are synchronising with a web site. Just stop them synchronising when they want or uninstall and watch your battery life extend

Things like having twitter and facebook auto update in the background. Well I turned those off because I tend to load the app to read the updates so the background updating served no purpose. Im now getting decent life out of my battery and I dont think Ill ever consider going back to an iphone. Id say Apple IOS is probably a bit more polished, Android being a bit of a rough diamond, but the HTC Sense theme I think is great, and I like the way you can customise absolutely everything. Ive had it about 4 weeks now and Im still finding new toys to play with and the more I get to know it, the more Im enjoying it.”

I got the HTC Desire about 10 months ago. I agree 100%. I simply couldn't go back to iPhone now. iPhone was very impressive when I got it, 18 months before that, but Android, and particularly with HTC Sense, is far better.

And listen, when I had it for 4 weeks I kept finding new toys. I've now had it for 10 and .... unexpectedly... I'm still findings toys to play with, and can't put it down. I think it's going to be the best phone you've owned so far. I've got another 14 months contract to go, but I know I'm going to be quite happy with having this phone for that length of time.

I've had the HTC Hero since it came out, probably almost 2 years now. Like yourself I'm still finding new things on it like the other day I found a way to set up an icon to open up Google maps which then calculates how to get to a pre-set destination. Very handy when I'm in a rush or out in the freezing cold rain and want to know which bus number is the right one for getting home.

I've downloaded advanced task killer, so hopefully this will do the trick.

The phone completely died on me today!!

Whoa!!!!!!!!!!!! No it wont! Advance Task Killer runs all the time! It uses more battery than the apps mentioned Just use the application list and stop/uninstall the apps you dont need. Once your battery has been callibrated, your have installed the OTA and removed the bad apps your phone will be fine. The main culprits have already been listed in this thread, but you need to examine your phone and assess which is consuming your battery by following the earlier instructions.

Ok taken your advice and deleted that app!

I've been through settings and disabled a lot of things (whether they're right I don't know). How do you install the OTA?

Thanks

It's in settings, then select about phone. Then select system software updates. That's the ota option.

I think my phone is faulty, well according to o2!!!

So the long and short of it, we have to return it to CW and get another handset!

How can I save my contacts onto my sim, anyone know?
