I have a Ferguson DVD player connected by HDMI cable to my Panasonic tv. The DVD player is rarely used but I was given a LoveFilm subscription as a gift so now I want to watch them using the tv.

I put in the disc, press play and the intro publicity stuff plays perfectly in full sound and vision, when I press play for the film (from the options scenes, film, etc) the sound goes, picture is still fine. This has happened with 4 discs I have tried, two are not rentals they are bought DVDs.

With the first rental DVD the only way I could watch it was using a small laptop (running Vista) with tinny sound, very annoying when I have a 42" plasma screen tv. The DVD would not play past Ch 3 on my PC (has XP), it made VLC, Power DVD and Media player crash at the same point on the DVD so I blamed the DVD after I had downloaded upgrades to all 3 players.

Any advice on how I can watch DVDs on my tv please?

I guess we need to know how your player is connected to your TV and Sound system (are you just using the TV speakers, for instance).

You might need to change a setting on the TV or the player, but without much detail to go on it's hard to advise you more specifically.

Certainly, if they're failing on several DVD players (including your laptop), then I would be suspicious of the disk.

Do Love Film send you a full commercial DVD, or is it especially written to expire, or something?

Thanks for replying, it is connected via HDMI cable, using the tv speakers as the cinema system died on New Years day. The sound works for the stuff they have on DVDs before the actual film starts, about Film4 or Sony etc. That is why I cannot find a solution, it is only when the actual film starts that the sound goes.

The instructions with the Ferguson (FDVD16501) player are very basic, troubleshooting has suggestions for no sound but not selective/sometimes sound. I looked through the Panasonic book (TH-42PX80) but it does not cover the situation either.

I think it is a copied DVD but as it plays OK on my laptop, I cannot blame the DVD totally; VLC, Media Player and Power DVD have a problem playing LoveFilm DVDs on my PC, the ones I have tried crash at some point then refuse to go past that point even after rebooting. My PC is 4.5 yrs old running XP.

I have found a way around it tonight by connecting the laptop to the tv, but that leaves a redundant 1 year old DVD player.

My guess is that the film is encoded with Dolby and the trailers etc are not and that there is a setting on your DVD player that you need to switch off the Dolby stream. I have a similar thing with my cheap and cheerful DVD player but the disc plays fine on the DVD recorder.

Thanks squidney, that sounds logical, I will test it when my next dvd arrives, I have only 1 dvd of my own, it plays no problem. There is a Dolby settings option, I will try switching it off.
