OK, I'm looking to get a new phone - I don't use it all that much texting and some calls. But the internet would be handy and some interesting apps which could occupy me when work is slow

I've been advised that Android is the way forward and I don't mind PAYG either, but considering my actual phone use is not great I don't want to spend a fortune. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as my husband left me talking to a salesman in Phones 5 U and I hadn't a clue what he was talking about.

I have spent a while looking on the internet at the San Francisco, T mobile Pulse and an LG one, whose name escapes me . I have noticed that some have data limits - so what would be a reasonable amount to have.

Thanking anyone who can help me through this minefield

Whoops guess that would be Phones 4 U!

First thing frist, avoid Phone4U, they are cowboys. Stick with your network or go somewhere like Carphone warehouse.

You considered the HTC Wildfire? There's some cracking deals around on payg. Think Argos do it quite cheap too.

Agreed re: Chavz4U, avoid them at all costs unless you're happy for a chav with a tie knot the size of a cricket ball flogging you a contract you don't need and a warranty you don't want then denying all knowledge of it when you go back 4 days later to cancel it.

I have an Android phone (HTC Desire) and I fully recommend them. The Wildfire is a great entry-level model so I'd also suggest going for that. A 500mb data deal per month should be ok to start you off.

The only reason to go into phones4u would be to play the game where you try and stay in as long as possible without having a salesperson jump on you. 10 seconds is typically a good score to aim for

You manage 10 seconds? Damn, you've got game. I've never been able to get past 7 seconds.

Why do Orange set their Dolphin tariff at only 100mb? Is that very low usage?

Think it might have been a fluke

I would suggest getting a contract and to deal with the phone company direct over the phone, you can barter, this works my mates and family get me to do it as i know my tech and its amazing how much they will budge to get/keep your custom.

As for phones Andriod is a safe bet loads of apps (think it is close to 100,000 now) and a good % are free.

Samsung and HTC are good, i currently have an HTC Desire HD and would not swap it for anything, though i have heard great things about the Samsung Nexus S and the Samsung Galaxy S.

You should be looking to pay no more than £30 a month for a free top smartphone 600 mins unlimited texts and 500mb of net (on a 2 year deal) or £35 for18months.

Watch out for the 1 month free insurance that you maybe offered politely decline and shop about on the net if you want insurance can save you quite a bit.

PAYG, O2 Simplicity, £15 a month for 100 anytime anynetwork minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited internent (subject to fare use policy). Unless you are online all the time, day in day out you will be fine.

Pick up an unlocked Android phone.
