Bruce said in a recent interview that comedians just didn't get knighthoods and if you think of all the great comics none of them actually have (Eric and Ernie each got an OBE).Bruce himself mentioned Tommy Cooper.Couldn't agree more re Ken Dodd, if it is down to tax evasion (of which he was cleared) surely it is time to move on.

Although Ken Dodd cheated tax (paid it all back) when you see him in concert....

You pay £20, he gives a £400 performance.

He's known for staying on stage forever.

"What a wonderful day! What a wonderful day for sticking a handful of ice cubes down your wife's blouse and shouting, 'How's THAT for the chest freezer you always wanted?'...

What a wonderful day! What a wonderful day for ramming a cucumber through next door's letterbox and shouting, 'Watch out! The martians are coming!'..."

Love, love, LOVE Doddy. If you ever get the chance to see him perform live on stage, you really do owe it to yourself and your chuckle muscles to get tickled in a totally tattifilarious way!

Amazing he got away with it. One of the comedians said of Ken Dodds Lawyer"He could get Stevie Wonder a driving licence"

I seen Ken Dodd on the Mersey Ferry about 18 months ago, & he was looking well.

As in:
'Ken Dodd died today!'
'Did he?'
'No, Doddy!'

Joke from 'Not Going Out' (early years).
Don't shoot the messenger.

(Ronnie Barker and Eric Morecambe both died without knighthoods, for example).!
I find that criminal! I guess if you live long enough, you'll eventually receive a knighthood. Agatha Christie 80 and Alfred Hitchcock 80 (4 months before his death!) and Charlie Chaplin didn't even receive his until 85!

Rather than "Did He" shouldn't it be Diddy

I once worked with a girl whose partner was on the opposing team. She said Ken's lawyer tore them to shreds!

Well when you've got the money - you hire the best!

He's still a comedic legend though - and one thing I do love about him is at least he's a northerner who still lives up north! He isn't one who goes on about how great the north is whilst quaffing Champagne from the their leafy residence in Henley on Thames (or similar).

As an aside - I think recent events have taught us that most people believe tax avoidance (and yes I know avoidance is different to evasion) is something to be easily forgiven anyway!

He certainly is.

My Mum and Dad are both in their 80's and they saw him in the late fifties-and they still say it was the funniest show they have ever seen.

The chap is a fabulous force of nature to be still touring at 89. Definite national treasure.

I just saw Doddy on the news about an hour ago, talking about becoming a Sir. He looked amazing for 89.

I find the whole clamouring to give Bruce Forsyth a knighthood a bit tiresome now, the man is a wonderful performer but there are lots more deserving than him in my opinion (Ronnie Barker and Eric Morecambe both died without knighthoods, for example).

What about Ken Dodd? 83 years old and still touring, still performing sell-out 6 hour gigs. A true giant of comedy respected and revered by many in the industry (even modern comedians whose own acts are very different).

Three cheers for Ken Dodd- a true showbiz giant!

Quite remarkable, especially when remembering his claim that he was to ill to stand trial for tax evasion all those years ago.

It's strange how Ken Dodd is so overlooked and ignored. You'd think he'd be a household name right now or a 'national treasure' of the kind many of his contemporaries are or were.

He will be to many of the older generation, but sadly I think he'll be largely unheard of to many younger people. Or they may have heard of him but not know much about him.

I understand that he dodged paying some taxes, but then other celebs do and get away with it, Jimmy Carr for example. You'd think that with the amount of years he's been at it and the time he's put in he'd be right up there with the likes of Brucie and the like. But he isn't really.

I think it's because he doesn't mix in the right "showbiz" circles, so his name and teeth have rarely appeared in the glossy magazines. He also has a healthy suspicion of the media, and doesn't often give interviews. He has never forgotten his roots and I seem to remember reading a while back that he generally did all his own shopping, etc, until well into his late seventies - he was more likely to be seen in the newsagent's than at a champagne reception.

Well deserved honour, I think.

I think you make some good points which may have merit.

It's really strange because entering this thread just now I've only just remembered a childhood memory that I had hidden away.
(No, it's okay, I don't mean that sort of really bad memory we've become accustomed to in recent years)
I've actually seen him live when I was a small child. It was in Blackpool and he had his 'Diddy Men' on stage. I can't believe that I'd literally forgotten all about that for my entire adult life since I was a small child up until right now.

I can't remember much about it other than it was quite magical for me as a small child as I have some vague memory of the stage setup being like a set for The Diddy Men.
It might be crap if I saw it now, but I remember it being a positive memory.

Dodd and Lester Piggott were both tried around the same time- Dodd was tried in his home city and acquitted. Lester Piggott wasn't so fortunate
