Hi there

I'm getting on a bit in years and cannot get my brain round all this new tech.
I have a Panasonic TV with freeview (2 scarts AV1 & AV2 + 1- HDMI 1& 1 HDMI 2 & Component Video & Audio L-R RCA type)
I want to connect a New Panasonic DMR EX83 DVD recorder (1 digital tuner, 2 scarts and 1 HDMI) and an old Grundig GDS200 Sky Box(2 scarts)

Can anybody please help and explain it in simply english

Many thanks

quite simple

DVD HDMI to TV HDMI 1

aerial from roof to DVD aerial IN

DVD aerial OUT to TV IN

miss out sky box as this may weaken Freeview signal !

SKY AV 2 ( scart ) to DVD AV 2

SKY AV 1 to TV AV 2

to record off sky select AV 2 on dvd channel select or input select ( whatever its called

Connect the Sky box TV Scart to the DVDR AV2 SCART.
Connect the DVDR AV1 SCART to the TV AV1 SCART.

The aerial should come into the DVDR and then on to the TV.

You can also connect the DVDR to the TV via HDMI, this will let you watch DVDs in 576p (or upscaled) which may be better.

Make sure that Sky and the DVDR are set to RGB throughout.

Is there a reason why you don't have Sky+? (I'd guess you're in a flat with a single feed?)

This is not a good idea, doing this will mean you can only record from the Sky box in composite which will be lower quality.

It's better to connect as I suggested and record in RGB.

Many thanks for your very swift easy to understand reply.

I like the Sky connection comment because I am concerned over the Freeview signal and only keeping the sky box so that I can receive BBC1,2 ITV1 via satelite which at the moment is not good enough through Freeview)

Thanks for your comments also.

Re Sky, not a subscriber any more, too expensive, but retained box and dish, better reception than analogue.
At present I have a analogue Panasonic disc DVD recorder which looks as if its destined for the bin or to be used as a DVD player only when the switch over in April happens.

Thinking about this makes me wonder what will happen in 2015/2016 when analogue radio is turned off, particularly with car radios. As afar as I know there is no mass car producer that is fitting Dab radio units to new cars as standard and a article I read recently suggested it may not start happening until 2014.

on page 42 off your TV manual , it shows how to record direct of TV

I think its page 40 for your DVD manual

Your TV is HDMI compliant for DVD and TV to talk to each other .

so in theory if your reception poor , then your TV aerial should go straight to the TV . Then Scan again for channels

I would try this and see if you can get the TV channels you are missing on your Freeview

Or get a bigger TV that has FREESAT built in , and get rid of the Sky box

After switch-over (or now if you get decent Freeview) I would recommend you get yourself a PVR, these are now quite cheap and give you the same basic facilities as Sky+ (simple, convenient to use) but for Freeview. They are much easier to use than a DVD recorder, the only advantage of a DVDR is if you want to archive recordings on to DVD for long term use.

I'm not sure from your post but it seems as if you haven't yet bought the EX83, if not then it would be good to consider whether this is the best choice compared to a PVR.
