Chihuahua

Someone bought a gorgeous chihuahua into work tonight, I think he was crossed with a yorkie. I had a little cuddle and I just wondered if anyone on here has one if they could give me any info on the kind of dogs they are, kind of care they need, how much you should roughly pay for one etc.

I would love to have one but obviously want to research everything properly first

Tonight?

You're doing the right thing by asking questions.

Ask more questions for another six months or so then decide if you want a dog.

They shit and piss - and need loads of attention - and not just when you want to give it.

There's a start.

Well thanks for that lovely bit of advice!! I'm am aware that dogs need a lot of attention hence the research!

Perhaps anyone out there with a chihuahua could offer some advice thats helpful!

If it was crossed with a Yorkie, it is a cross breed, not a Chihuahua. If you are serious about getting a purebred Chi, see this website - http://www.the-british-chihuahua-club.org.uk/ - which tells you all you need to know. I would suggest contacting the secretary and introducing yourself. They will be able to advise you. Please do not encourage the production of cross breeds by buying a Chi/Yorkie or any of the other weird and wonderful combinations. You will pay as much, if not more, than you would for a purebreed and you will have no idea whether the parents have been through the appropriate breed health schemes. You will probably told that as they are 'designer dogs' they don't have health issues. Believe that at your peril.

We used to have a chihuahua called Rosie, and want eventually to get another but are waiting for the right moment.

One thing to remember with chi's is they are little dogs but think they are lions ! Ours would take on all comers no matter how huge ! They are also first and foremost dogs so need everything their larger cousins need plus they need careful vet care as like many small dogs teeth can be a problem and they have a tendency to knee problems.
The smaller one's can also have a tendency to hypoglycemia and various other problems.
In my experience unless you are home all day they like company too, ours had two other dogs with her all the time so she was supremely happy.
