I got a Wildfire a couple of weeks back and think it's great. My OH now covets it (she can't see s**t go past her ).

So my question is this - is the Desire worth the extra money?

A friend recently got the Wildfire, but exchanged it for a Desire shortly after comparing it to mine.

The Wildfire was notably slower at some tasks, and some applications either took ages to load or crashed. It really depends what you want to use your phone for, it sounds like you haven't experienced any issues (maybe my mate's was a dud) so if you're happy with the Wildfire, it may not be worth exchanging.

Sounds like your mate was unlucky, my son has had his for about 3 months with no problems and mine has been fine so far.

You're probably right, he couldn't get games like Angry Birds to work and and the touch screen sometimes had a mind of its own. At an extra £5 a month to upgrade to the Desire, he decided it was worth the extra money.

There's the rub, we have sim-only contracts so it's £200 extra for the Desire over the Wildfire.

The Wildfire is an excellent choice for PAYG particularly at £129.95 from Phones4U. I just wish I could get the hang of these new-fangled app thingies!

To be honest other than them being by HTC there is no comparison between these two phones, one is low/mid end phone the other is a top of the range.

Both good phones in their own right but the differences are huge.

Well Google will tell you what exactly but e.g.

Screen size
Screen Resolution
Processor Speed
Amoled v TFT screen

These all relate in their seperate ways to what you can do with the phone i.e. compatability of apps, gameplay, 10.1 flash or not and media playback to name a few.

Much like an Mini v a Bently they will both get you there but which would you rather travel in. Also in the same vain it would be unfair to compare the two cars as they cost different amounts.

They are both good phones but one is budget one not.

Isn't the Wildfire on PAYG, where as the Desire is a Monthly contract, so a bit unfair to compare them, unless you can get them on the same Tariffs.

They are both available on contract, the Wildfire on PAYG,.

My son has a Wildfire on contract (18 months @ £15/month) and paid £60 for the phone. I paid £160 for the phone and have a £10/month rolling contract which is £10 more over 18 months BUT not tied into a long term contract.

So, I will be using the phone for email, a bit of browsing but not watching video etc.

I've also heard that the Desire has significantly poorer battery life - unsurprising I suppose with a bigger screen and a better processor.

I'm on PAYG so have the Wildfire.

One of my hates, the Phone technology has gone through the roof, in that Phones are more or less mini PCs, with Internet connection & more, but the Battery life hasn't developed the same way, so if you have a Smart Phone, your charging the battery every day.

From what I've read the Desire's battery life is even poorer.

I don't find the Wildfire's battery life too bad but that's only because I only switch things on when I need to use them, wireless, bluetooth etc.
