It was in my Bottom Five as well. The story isn't one of the better Dalek ones and Jon Pertwee's performance was as about as straightlaced and moralistic as it ever was. No eccentricity anywhere at all.

And toy Daleks as the Ice Army didn't help either......
Agree about Planet of the Daleks, it's all a bit mundane, it only just managed to scrape out of my bottom 5.

Does anyone else dislike "The Day Of The Daleks" or "Death To The Daleks", in any way?
They are both fairly morbid affairs, but I find them much cleverer and more intriguing than 'Planet', which really doesn't seem to go anywhere.

I like Day, I think the Ogrons were a great addition and would love to see them make a return. Plus, a story actually about time itself, which is pretty rare in Who.

I really liked Death when I first saw it, but I don't think it's aged that well. Considering how much I love Daleks, there's been a high number of misses from their appearances!
These are rare in Who

Death hasn't aged well, the "root" things and just overall it is a tired runaround of a story for me

...and yes a lot of Dalek stories do seem to be misses!

Oh yeah the toy Daleks, fogotten that!!! But I guess if the story is good enough, shite visuals can be forgiven considering age etc...I love the Green Death but that fly!! And the maggots aren't that convincing in many scenes either...
Well at least in The Green Death, Pertwee was at his more engaging with the dressing up and his attitude towards Jo's budding romance with Professor Jones add some extra dimension to his usual characterisation. Just wished it had surfaced in more stories.

To be honest, all Pertwee's Dalek stories weren't that good. I'd say Day Of The Daleks was the better out of the three but even that suffered as you could see there was only three Daleks there.

Death To The Daleks I put in my bottom five as well. The first part of episode 1 was okay but after that, there's nothing else really to commend it and as with the Silurian story and the later Cyberman story of the following Season, there was that sodding awful incidental music again which I hate!

With the Pertwee era, I think a lot of the stories drag on too long, lots of six and seven parters. Too much filler time running around disengages me, Colony in Space and Monster of Peladon would be examples of being better if they were shorter.

Season 7 was the worst when most of them were 7 Parters!

That's mostly but not, all the reason I put The Silurians in my bottom 5. However, saying that Inferno worked as a 7 parter because it was done in a way that split up the story by introducing a parallel world mid-story so for that I can make an exception.

I like Inferno and without the Parallel world departure, I wouldn't like it half as much.
I don't have it as a favourite story, I think mainly because it had such a huge reputation I was a bit underwhelmed when I eventually saw it.

Best - Planet of the Daleks ..... yes Planet of the Daleks. I loved it. Loved the last episode the best.

Worst story:- his very first one. Don't get me wrong I love the Autons, but that whole struggle with the regeneration saga seemed to last an age...

Longer than it did in later stories, such as Davison opener "Castrovalva"?

I agree, both Davison and Colin Baker's debut story took forever for eithe rof them to stabilise. I think with Davison it was pretty much the last episode of Castrovalva before he normalised, with the odd wobble here and there. With Colin Baker it was practically until the last Scene before he declared he had stabilised.

With Jon pertwee I'd say it was all done and dusted by the end of Part 2.

Top 5:
Spearhead from Space
Inferno
The Dæmons
The Three Doctors
The Green Death

Bottom 5:
Invasion of the Dinosaurs
Planet Of The Daleks
Colony in Space
Death to the Daleks
Day of the Daleks

Daleks were not well used in the Pertwee era, imho.

Then Pertwee should have made one fewer Dalek stories (if not two fewer) and battled the Cybermen at least once!
(OK, so he did that in "The Five Doctors" - but that was as a guest in an anniversary story, years after he regenerated!)

It's a shame because the Cybermen could have appeared in every era of Classic Who had they appeared in a fully fledged Pertwee adventure(Yes, I know about Carnival Of Monsters).

It's a bit like The Brigadier not meeting the Sixth Doctor during his Era so Nick Courtney could have claimed that too!!!!

Didn't they work together at least once, through "Dimensions In Time"?

Yes they did but as I said, during his own period he was playing The Doctor, they never met and I don't believe Dimensions In Time is canon...*Runs*

I agree about the 3rd Doctor shaking off the regeneration rather quicker than others. It's not really his fault he was dragged away to a hospital, when the coast was clear he managed to think 'sod it', then just got out of the bed, found some clothes and got to work.

Re "Planet of the Daleks" I think this was a very good example of where the novelisation worked far better than the telly version did. The invisible spiridons, "liquid ice", a vast army of daleks and a jungle full of nasties all worked great in the imagination of the reader, and all failed pretty poorly with a BBC '70s budget

Back OT - I cant really say after 40 years what would really be the best but those that really stick out would be

Spearhead from space
Terror of the Autons
The green death
The Daemons
Inferno.

With Terror the stand out due to introducing the Master, the Devil doll, Death by armchair, killer daffodils and the only thing scarier than autons - autons dressed as clowns

Perhaps getting shot helped him "snap out of it"

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about that bit. The 3rd Doctor was certainly keen to get moving.

I'm doing Pertwee at the moment, so this will have to be updated.

Unfortunately, he is still my least favourite Doctor out of One, Two, Three, Nine, Ten and Eleven.

Anyway from what I've seen so far:

Top 3

Spearhead from Space
Inferno
The Ambassadors of Death

Bottom 3

The Claws of Axos

Okay just the one. I haven't seen anything else yet that I haven't liked. But I've only seen season 7 and 8.
