How do you get them to eat their veggies?

After the Impossible Princess disappeared for a whole year, I got two budgies called BC and Heather.

They only eat seed and I am trying to get them to eat their veggies too but they don't seem interested.

Any budgie owners out there who have managed to get them to eat their greens and how did you manage to do it when they have not seen greens before?

If you are providing a seed they love getting them to eat anything else will be difficult, taking the seed away would be cruel. So I have a feeling you may have extreme difficulty getting them to eat the veggies. I'm not even convinced it can be done !

I put their veggies in a different bowl onthe floor but they have not got very curious and I don't think they know it is there. All they do is sit on their swing and chirp all day which proves they are very happy birds.

They are meant to have egg too for calcium. I haven't bothered with the egg as that would work out quite expensive.

When we had budgies we used to put there apple, carrots and lettuce through the bars. I just used to wedge it in. They might peck at it then

Ah I didn't realise you were putting it on the bottom of the cage, now would you eat food from your toilet which is really what you are asking them to do ! Try what maisey moo has suggested.

Egg yolk provided protein, egg shell provided calcium.
It is more common to give them cuttlefish for calcium. You clip a piece on the side of the cage and it lasts for ages.
They should also have access to an iodine nibble for minerals.
Don't forget they need fine bird grit as well as seed to help them grind up food in their crop. Grit often also has very small pieces of shell in it, another source of calcium.
As for the veggies try starting them on seeding grass in summer but made sure it is from a safe source.
You can also give them fresh apple tree twigs to chew on and they will often eat the bark.

Do they need their greens? (I know nothing about birds). New clinical research has shown the 'Five a day' for humans is in fact a bit of a myth.

My mum used to put like i say between the bars. My dog used to wait till the other half fell on the floor and ate that piece.

Make sure they don't go picking up any penguins.

put them through the bars or get a "cage clip" and clip them there with one of those

our bird loves lettuce, spring greens, mint and... well, basically all sorts
celery, bread, ice cream cones, mashed potato, gravy, curry sauce... if you sit down with a packet of crisps, he flies over and expects you to put one on your head for him to peck at

My old cocketiel would love Doritos or Nachos.

I've been keeping budgies (both indoors and out in an aviary) for 16 years now, and when there are a few of them you always seem to get a bolder, more curious one which will try anything new you put up for them, and then the others, not wishing to miss out, will try too. Mine have always loved broccoli, carrots, baby sweetcorn, but by far the favourite is dandelion leaves or chickweed.

As others have said, pin it up through the cage bars.

Regarding the egg, try and buy some EMP, available from most pet shops, and I put a spoonful in with their seeds, twice a week, and it keeps mine healthy. It contains all the vitamins they need. You also give it to breeding birds when they are feeding young, and can mix it into a soft crumbly mix, but dry is fine for a maintenance diet.
