Blackberry Help: Connecting to Internet on PAYG 02 via Wi-fi
Hi all
Just purchased a Blackberry 9780 (after months of deliberating!) Anyhow, here's what I am stuck on and wonder if anyone can help? Basically, I am on 02 PAYG. I thought I would just occassionally connect to the Inernet/Facebook for example via my wireless router (Orange livebox). I managed (I think!) to connect to this fine, had to enter my WEP key etc and it found everything ok - it now says (on the home page) 02-UK ....then the Livebox name.... Now, if I go to click on the Facebook app for example, I get a message saying:- "You are currently on a data plan that does not support this service and if you want to use this service contact your mobile provider" I contacted 02 via their online live support and couldn't really understand what they were saying.... I was asking them if I had to pay for a bolt on (which they mentioned in the conversation) in order to use the web via my home wi-fi router - they kept saying I need to contact my ISP about this..... . But surely, if it says it's found the router and connected but won't let me use the internet because of "data plan" message above, my ISP (Orange) won't be able to help will they? Do you, on PAYG have to pay 02 for wi-fi? I thought this was "free" say from your home network... Service status reads as follows: Phone number: Unknown number Status: Available Connection: Mobile Network Blackberry Internet Service Connection: Not connected Blackberry Enterprise Server: Not Connected Mobile Network: Coverage gprs Provider: 02-UK Wi-fi Network Active Profile: Livebox -3CA0 SSID: Livebox -3CA0 Type: 802.11b/g Bluetooth: Status: off Please help!!!! Many thanks in advance! |

It's all down to how the application you use (eg facebook, twitter, google maps, etc, etc) works.
Different applications use different "internet channels" so to speak. Some will hapily use the "carrier internet" - eg the standard o2 internet, others will only use the "blackberry internet" or BIS for short, some apps will use either. To get the best out of a blackberry (eg pushed email, certain apps, blackberry messenger, app world, etc), you do need the blackberry internet service. The blackberry internet service is used over wifi or the phone network - so yes, you could have problems with certain applications even over your own wifi - it depends on how the application was written. BIS offers extra benefits over the standard carrier internet, apart from those above, including compressing your internet traffic - so you effectively get more out of your internet allowance. I believe it's also encrypted - so if you're using public wifi in starbucks say, people should be able to eavesdrop onto your internet usage. |

OP, you need to change your browser to HOTSPOT BROWSER to use wi-fi only. And then, if you want all data features of a blackberry, call O2 and ask to change to Blackberry Web and Text PAYG tariff. |

Thanks for your help everyone....
In the end I managed to get the web browser working via my home wi-fi - so, as was pointed out above, whilst the Facebook and Twitter apps don't work when you click on their icon in the menu's, they do work if you enter them manually into the web browser and save them as favourites (which I have done on my homescreen) I didn't think Blackberry apps would work without the blackberry service activated by 02 (via a payg bolton) but it seems to.... I've downloaded a few free apps no problems... Can anyone tell me what Blackberry messenger is? My wife has a blackberry (curve) and wondered if this is like some form of instant messaging? It looks like it is... but I am not sure when I "invite" a contact, it mentions about type an "email address/pin/name" - not sure what to put here exactly - there's also something about scanning a bar code in - again not sure what this means. I do have a pin code mentioned that I saw though... Does this system work if you've not got the afore-mentioned blackberry services via a bolt on from 02? It's been quite a steep learning curve, trying to set this phone all up and learn all the different quirks (compared to my old Nokia 6303 - which seems very "old fashioned" compared to this!) - I am quite liking it now, after a day of experimenting with it, setting up calender reminders/contacts/learning to type on the keyboard!!!!!! |

Yeah, blackberry messenger is basically an instant messaging app that's built into the device.
Your pin number is like a serial number of the device, 8 letters or digits. It'll be on the box the blackberry came in. But if you type in to a text or something the phrase mypin and then press space, it'll show you your pin. |

It will not work without the bolt-on/tariff I mentioned before. |
