Pulled Pork in Slow Cooker
big_hard_lad

Hi guys,

Have any of you ever made pulled pork before? I got a slow cooker for my birthday and I'm dying to try it out as my mother-in-law is famous for it. She, however, gets seasoning sent from the US which she puts in the slow cooker with the pork and some water.

I'm looking at this recipe...

http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/reci...lled-pork-1100

Any tips?

Pulled pork

"Ohhhhh Matron"

Sorry.

It's Friday afternoon

I'm fed up with the 'politics of the workplace'

And in that kind of mood

Looks good, I had a look at that one but I wanted to go for one that wasn't just "put pork, onion, cloves and some BBQ sauce in your slow cooker". I wanted to make the sauce myself.

Here are three recipes. They are from the US so some measurement conversion and ingredient substitution may be required.

Quote:
“Mexican Pulled Pork Tacos

Ingredients:

1 medium-size onion, coarsely chopped
1 boneless pork shoulder roast or picnic roast (about 3 1/2 pounds)
1 medium-size sweet red pepper, cut into 1/4-inch squares
1 medium-size sweet green pepper, cut into 1/4-inch squares
1 can (14.5 ounces) jalapeno-flavored diced tomatoes
2 teaspoons ground cumin
11/2 teaspoons garlic salt
11/2 teaspoons dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon cayenne red pepper
1 jar (4 ounces) diced green chiles, drained
1 can (11 ounces) corn kernels, drained
3 tablespoons tomato paste
16 tortillas
Garnish (optional):
1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves, rinsed and patted dry
Sour cream

Directions:

1. In 5- to 5 1/2-quart slow cooker, layer the chopped onion, pork roast and sweet peppers. In a medium-size bowl, stir together the tomatoes, cumin, garlic salt, oregano and cayenne pepper. Pour evenly over the mixture in the slow cooker. Add chiles and corn.

2. Cover slow cooker; cook on high heat for 5 hours. Remove pork roast to cutting board; keep warm.

3. Remove 11/2 cups liquid from pot and discard. Stir the tomato paste into the vegetable mixture in the slow cooker. Cover; cook for another 30 minutes.

4. Cut the pork roast into slices. Shred the slices using 2 forks to pull the meat apart. Add the shredded pork to mixture in the slow cooker (photo 3); heat through.

5. To serve, wrap the pork mixture in the warmed corn tortillas, dividing the mixture equally among the tortillas. Garnish each serving with fresh cilantro leaves and sour cream, if desired.

Servings: 8 servings. ”

“BBQ Pulled Pork

Ingredients:

Pork shoulder roast, about 4 pounds
2 medium onions, thinly sliced
1 1/2 cups water
1 bottle (16 ounces) barbecue sauce, or 2 cups of your own homemade sauce
1 cup chopped onion

Preparation:

Place half of the thinly sliced onions in bottom of slow cooker; add pork and water, along with remaining onion slices. Cover and cook on LOW for 8 to 10 hours or 4 to 5 hours on HIGH heat setting. Drain liquid from slow cooker; chop the meat coarsely and discard excess fat. Put the pork back in the slow cooker. Add barbecue sauce and chopped onion. Cover and cook on LOW for 4 to 6 hours longer. Stir occasionally. Serve with warm split buns and coleslaw.

Serves 8 to 10.

EZ Pulled Pork

Ingredients:

1 (5 pound) pork butt roast
salt and pepper to taste
1 (14 ounce) can beef broth
1/4 cup brewed coffee

Directions:

Cut roast in half. Rub each half with salt and pepper, and place in the slow cooker. Pour broth and coffee over the meat.

Turn the slow cooker to Low, and cover. Cook for 6 to 8 hours, or until the roast is fork tender.

Carefully remove the roast to a cutting board. Pull the meat off the bone with a fork. You may also chop it with a cleaver afterwards, if you like it really finely cut.

Servings: 8-10 ”

Heh.. I just posted this in the Brisket thread, but it works here too. Make your own smoker:

Alton Brown is actually making pulled pork in that video.

Thought I'd update on this.

Made it yesterday using the Good Housekeeping recipe. Worked a treat. I added a little more Cider Vinegar to the sauce when I was thickening it as I thought it could do with a little more zing. Served in warmed rolls with homemade potato wedges and corn on the cob with garlic butter. It went down a storm...highly recommended

Another update from me on this...

Had frozen half of what was made as there was LOADS for the 2 of us. Decided to heat up the meat and have it in tacos with some guacamole, soured cream, lettuce, cheese, mushrooms and peppers. Was lovely and I will most definitely be doing it again.

I'd not heard of it until I went to America last summer.

I found it rather ghastly as it was too smoked for my liking. They was also a lot of it. Americans make their portions too big.

Thanks for the update. My father recently got a slow cooker so I might borrow it and follow that recipe.

After reading this and other threads on here about pulled pork recipes I am giving it a go.

Our oven is on it's last legs and we are seeking a new oven or free standing cooker - price dictates what we replace it with and we have been quoted silly amounts to get a new thermostat etc for our (very cheap at the time but that was what we could afford oven)Anyway our oven isn't heating up as high as it should do so we (Himself and I) thought a long slow cooking of fabulous pork was the best send off our long serving oven could have.

The pork shoulder is marinating in what tasted uncooked as WOW marinade at the moment. WE are popping it in the oven around nine in the morning and letting it do it's stuff all day till around 5pm-ish.

We can't wait

There's a brilliant recipe on BBC Recipes for a conventional oven.I think it's by Simon Hopkins but just put 'Pulled Pork,' in the recipe finder. I've been asked to make it 3 times since I discovered it in June and I'm sure you could adapt it for a slow cooker. The flavours are brilliant. I did home-made coleslaw and barbecue sauce as well as rolls and baked potatoes with corn on the cob on the side. Yum.

The perfect accompaniments, IMO. Throw in a wee bit of garlic butter for the corn and you're laughing

Is it this one by Simon Rimmer? Looks pretty simple.

I would like to try out the slow cooker recipe though as I can try out my father's new slow cooker

That's the one - sorry, got the wrong Simon! It was so easy that I couldn't believe the result was so good. We went to a hog roast last year and loads of people thought this result where the meat cost about twenty quid was better than the roast where the hog cost several hundred. I was mighty chuffed.

Please excuse my ignorance as I've never used a slow-cooker much, but how does the crackling turn out at the end?

There is no crackling on pulled pork. Don't reckon you could do crackling in a slow cooker, the very nature of it keeps the meat moist which would mean the skin wouldn't crisp up.

I thought not as the slow cooker process depends on steaming - I removed the lid on Simon Rimmer's recipe about an hour before the end and I managed to get a reasonably crisp skin so I suppose I cheated a bit.
