Cheaper to buy the 320gig and a 1TB HDD and install it yourself. It's about 11 screws and follow your nose..

If you upgrade yourself to let's say a Western Digital AV-GP 1 TB at around £ 60 then you come out at about £ 310 anyway (John Lewis 320GB model price £ 249 + £ 60). Hardly worth you violating your official guarantee for £ 19. Sounds like a bargain.
OK so you land up with a spare 320GB HDD if you do the upgrade yourself but you still have to buy a docking station for another £ 20 to use it.

Current best price is from Amazon or Dixons at under £220 which makes a saving of about £45.

I have to say I'd rather have mine externally as it takes all the strain off the internal PSU which seems to be a weak point on the HDR traditionally although I'm sure the pSU will be stronger in the 1Tb version.

That's the only draw back BTW to converting yourself. If you don't mount it externally, then dropping in a 1TB into a box designed for 250 or 320, potentially works the PSu much harder than intended.

I don't think it would work it much harder. It should need little, if any, extra power.

Give all the problems with PVR PSU's one would hope that Humax had the sense to build some headroom into theirs so that it is not operating at the edge of the envelope.

Edit: Having just checked the Western Digital site it seems that the Green 1TB drive uses less power at 4.86W read/write compared to the Green 320GB drive at 7/5W read/write. Idle figures are 2.82W/4W respectively.

Now, that was a surprise!

I was looking at the price quoted on the web site for 320gig - £182 plus £60 for HDD is £242. That's a saving of £87 and another 320gig HDD for backup. Not bad in my eyes, but each to their own!

The £182 price is for a Manager's Special - a reconditioned unit. Also only a 1 year guarantee iso 2 years. To each their own. Personally I prefer a solid guarantee and service even if I have to pay a bit more initially.

For electronics generally most failures occur in the first few weeks or any time after around 5 years (unless there is a design fault such as a PSU that runs much too hot).

So although it may be worth paying a bit more for an extra year's guarantee it's probably not worth paying much.

The price at John Lewis is now down to £224.95 possibly in anticipation of widespread availability of the new 1TB model. It's worth the extra fiver for a 2 year guarantee so I am very glad that Currys Norwich had no stock when I was looking this afternoon.
