Blackberry Bold 9780: Do I "have" to install the Desktop software to connect to pc?

Hi all

Just recently got a Blackberry Bold 9780. Very impressed with it so far (Brilliant battery life by the way - I charged it up on Weds afternoon when I first got it and have been trying it out quite heavily ever since and it's now Saturday morning and the battery is still at 50 percent full!)

Anyhow, just a quick question: I've installed the Blackberry software on my main desktop pc and successfully transferred music and piccy's using this (I notice that once this software is installed you can also just simply "drag and drop" various items into the various folders - so dead easy to do)

My question though is this: On, say, my laptop, do I have to install this same software from the supplied disc in order to get my phone recognised? With the laptop, I am simply wanting to plug the phone in via USB and then transfer some the photo's from the phone.

I am right in thinking that the computer (laptop) won't recognise this phone unless you have this software installed first? In other words, you can't just simply plug it in via USB, then locate it (or wait for the box that pops up giving you the options of what you want to do)?

I found the software a little cumbersome/slow on my main desktop so didn't really want to put it on my laptop if I could get away with it - but having tried it and nothing happens, I guess I've perhaps answered my own question!

The other thing I did try was to remove the memory card and plug that in a USB adapter - this did work fine and let me drag and drop without using the software...just puzzled as to why you have to use the disc with the USB lead connected to the phone when other phones, like my old Nokia 6303 for example, showed up straight away with no additonal software needed....

Any help really appreciated!

Desktop Manager comes with the drivers for recognising your BB.

If you put your phone into mass storage mode [theres a popup on screen when plugged in] you can drag and drop without having to even open up the desktop manager software.
so you'll just need to install it.

Many thanks for the advice...

I just tried plugging the phone (with memory card in it of course) into my laptop via the USB lead and on screen (on the Blackberry) there were three options: Sync, Charge and USB Drive.

I clicked on USB drive - and hey presto - the "Autoplay" box pops up allowing me to access the photo's etc without having to install the software!

Many thanks for your help!

Cheers, yeah, I found it quite a steep learning curve, from my old simple Nokia, but after a couple of days of "bearing with it", I now think it's fantastic!

As I say, for me, one of the pleasing things (and something I was worried about when swapping to another phone of this type) was how loud the ringtones were and indeed how often you would have to charge the battery. All the touchscreen charging every day would have driven me up the wall, as I wouldn't have remembered to do this (coming from a Nokia that I only charge about once per week!) - I am really pleased to find that the ringtones are very loud and the battery is still going strong since it's initial charge up on Wednesday - it's now Sunday and (despite playing with the phone quite heavily) the battery is still just under half way, so I am well impressed!
