I've been listening to the Beach Boys a bit lately, and I'm torn between two songs as my favourite; God Only Knows and Heroes and Villains.

What are your favourite Beach Boys songs?

God only Knows is one of the most beautiful songs ever. Heroes and Villains is just as good but in a different way.
Among my faves are Tears in the Morning, Breakaway, Help me Rhonda, Forever, Lady Linda, Wonderful and Diedre.

Best Albums: Surf's Up and Holland.

But..... if I hear Good Vibrations one more time, I think I'll be ill. Yes, it was clever. But the oldies stations over-play it to the point of making me sick of it. You just know that when they say 'next it's the Beach Boys...' it's going to be good vibrations.

Have you listened to any of Brian Wilson's recent stuff? His Album 'Smile' is fantastic.

Capablanca - you're right, the final version of Wonderful is not as good as the early demo (was that the one made for the original Smile album-that-never-was?)

Little Bird is such a heartening little song.

Also Trader. Wow. And Cabinessence. Oh God, just all of them...what a band.

I did listen to parts of Smile once, my grandfather had it in the car, and I was impressed, I'll have to get round to hearing it all though.

That's right. I've got it on the Beach Boys box-set from years back. There's a whole disc devoted to '66/'67 Smile out-takes.

I read on another forum that Capitol are rumoured to be putting out the Smile stuff which will be well worth getting.

I certainly hope so. Years ago I recorded a radio documentary about the original Smile and it featured many bits of songs. I was blown away with Wonderful and I think Cabinessence got an airing too.
The tape got well and truly fnargled (it was a reel-to-reel recording) in a freak rewind accident....

Pfft a difficult question, however easily my favourite track is Disney Girls and then God Only Knows but I love Carl and The Passions and Holland very much in their entirety.

Although I consider Good Vibrations to be a masterpiece, I like Do It Again best. On another thread I included it in a potential all-time top 10 singles!

Its a massive statment, but Good Vibrations could well be the greatest piece of popular music ever recorded.

Good Vibrations is a great song and a very clever arrangement but I think there are better from the Beach Boys catalogue.

Some have been already mentioned but I remember the first time I heard Caroline No and was completely blown away.

Others definitely God Only Knows, Sail On Sailor, Surfs Up, Darling. And I've always had a soft spot for Student Demonstration Time (I know it's Riot In Cell Block No 9 re-written - but then so was framed by Alex Harvey)

I remember seeing Bruce Johnstone doing Disney Girls with just a piano on the Old Grey Whistle Test which is one of the great OGWT performances.

I was fortunate enough to see Brian Wilson back in 2004 with The Wondermints doing the whole of SMiLE plus a good selection of solo stuff and Beach Boy classics - I rate it as the best gig I have ever been to.

I know it's universally agreed that Summer In Paradise is the worst Beach Boys album ever, but I like the tracks Summer In Paradise and One Summer Night. Add to that, Caroline No, Disney Girls, Lady Lynda, Darlin', God Only Knows (my favourite), Good Vibrations, Lets Go Away For A While, I Just Wasn't Made For These Times, Sail On Sailor, I Can Hear Music, and their cover of Chapel Of Love.

God only Knows and Don't worry baby 2 of the best songs ever written.

Its nice to see the appreciation, personally cannot stand the Beatles and even McCartney said after hearing Smile.
"Wilson is the greatest musical genius of our time"

Nuff said.

I really like Long Promised Road. It was used on the soundtrack of the underrated US remake of Life On Mars and was so evocative of that era.

I missed that one but went to the earlier Pet Sounds show (2001) - it was amazing. Fun encore as well with plenty of the big hits.

I really like the album 'Friends' - ''Busy Doing Nothing' is a great tune from that album.

The "B" sides were real gems with ballards such as "In My Room" and "The Warmth Of The Sun" being up there with the best and strange brews such as "You're Welcome" (one of the shortest songs ever made).
