if they had cast a real transexual or a man in drag?? I've a feeling a lot of viewers ignore the transexual part and think of Hayley as a woman (yes, she IS a woman now she's had the op PC bandwagon jumpers)...I can't accept Julie Hesmondhalgh as a TS because she's too feminine - she doesn't have that TSness about her.

I think if she was actually played by a man it would be a lot harder to believe her and Roy as a couple.

So, is the blurb that the first TS character still in it 13 years later a load of crap? Is Hayley just seen as a woman?

I usually see her as a woman, and then it pops into my head now and again...

But no I think it is a good idea to have Julie as Hayley. Anyone remember Nadia from Big Brother? Looking at her, I couldn't tell she was a transexual!

And there's this other girl I've seen in the paper for sleeping with some rugby player, she also used to be a man, and believe me, looking at her you would not think that

I agree with this.

Really it's not about how much she looks like a man or a woman it's how Julie plays her. Personally I think she fits the role perfectly. One of corrie's underrated actresses.

you aint met many TS's have you? yes there are some that have trouble passing, others you cant tell, i know for a fact you could tell i was anything other than a bloke.

I would like them to cast a trans but most trans people (including myself) think of ourselves as men/women and so playing someone with GID as a trans would take a strong person to go through all their baggage. I only know of one trans actor playing a trans and that was candis cayne in DSM.

What do you mean, too feminine?
People tell me i'm feminine, and wouldn't have guessed that i'm a transsexual.
But thats because I started very early.
Everyone is different!
I self med, from Inhouse Pharmacy, but still, i'm 17, and look like a girl now.
So please do more research on trans issues.

self meding it never the right thing to do, but im sure you know that, i hope that the dr you are with at least knows this so they can monitor your health, i know way to many people mess themselves up doing stuff off the gp's radar.

The GP is monitoring me, yes.
I have regular blood tests.
It was my only option.
That or suicide.
I just couldn't let the testosterone effects take over my body
Anyway, we're going a bit off topic here, we're here to discuss soaps lol.
If you want to discuss this, message me, or take it to the general discussion boards.
I hope that didn't sound rude, I just don't want us to get into trouble for talking about irrelevant topics...

I like how Hayley's sex change is so low key. She lives as a woman and as treated as such, I think most viewers just know her as kind hearted Hayley because her character is defined by who she is as an individual, not by her transexuality. If her transexuality was constantly mentioned in many people's eyes she would become The Transexual formerly known as Hayley.

Yes, thats how, ideally everyone trans person wants to live.
They want to be known for being themselves and individual, not just as a transsexual.
Its good everyone accepts Hayley, but sadly, this isn't always the case, as I should know, seeing as I am a trans person.
