Panasonic dmr-bw780 timer probs
Violetb7
05-02-2011
Past couple of days I haven't been able to use the timer recording functions via the programme guide on a Panasonic dmr-bw780. It is connected to the tv via HDMI, have had the set up for a few months, and have made sure everything is securely plugged in. When you find the programme you want to record and select it for the timer, for a few seconds the confirmation screen appears then the screen goes blue and it switches back to the channel you were watching before selecting the guide. Have tried it via scart and the same thing happens, thought it was due to bad weather but winds have died down and my Humax pvr works fine upstairs. Could it be the tv? Am I missing something really basic here?

I think that this must be a problem caused by an update from panasonic as 2 of my units wouldn't set timers, I set one back to shipping conditions and that worked for a few days and the second I just disconnected which also seemed to work, though now my dvd recorder has reverted to not allowing me to set a recording and I can't even reset it to default settings. I'll try the bluray recorder later and see if its still behaving itself.

I took my unit into the local panasonic shop today, they reset it and tried it on a different transmitter, so*s law it worked, brought it home and retuned only for the fault to reappear.
They rang panasonic technical for me who have had no end of problems and are working on an update to cure the problem, my transmitter is mendip but don't know what they've done to cause so many problems, hope it's cured soon as it's a pain.

My machine came with S.W 1.32 which I believe is the latest version.
I've had (touches wood) no problems with timers at all

I have had a DMR-BW780 for over 9 months without any problems but suddenly this week I have experienced the same problem trying to set up recording from the programme guide, but the problem seems to have solved itself!
On Wednesday the system worked perfectly.
On Thursday after selecting the programme to record and pressing "OK" the tv screened blanked and then returned to the programme previously being watched. This situation continued all day.
On Friday morning the problem persisted.
On Friday pm the system worked perfectly again and recordings could be set up.After 4 hours system still OK.
What is going on?

I got the impression from the last time this happened that there was a glitch and Panasonic had to carry out an update to rectify this which it does, although it can take a couple of days. Not good but at least it does get rectified.

The problem lies in an issue with the EPG.
Possibly corruption or an occasional happenstance as not all users under the same conditions are affected.

Some say there is a difference in behaviour between SD and HD channels in this regard.

Until a fix there is a workaround to get control back.

To correct this you will need to re-set the date and time settings.
Press the FUNCTION MENU button
Scroll down to OTHERS then click OK
Scroll down to SETUP then click ok
Scroll down to OTHERS then click OK
Scroll down to the CLOCK setting and press OK
You will then need to disable the AUTOMATIC setting and then manually re-set the date and time for approximately 10 days ahead in order to reset the GUIDE.

When this has been changed leave the unit for approximately 5-10 minutes and then retune the unit and set the CLOCK back to automatic, this should now correct what you are experiencing.
The last retuning step seems un-needed
Most users with this problem have simply reset the guide and it works OK.

Thanks for that Gavtech, seeing as it happened again this weekend but I left it to sort itself out, haven't checked it since but am getting a tad fed up with it.

Well, it hadn't sorted itself out so I had to resort to Gavtechs post, and yes it worked, thanks again.

Is anyone still experiencing problems with their machine? We purchased ours in Nov 2010 and had problems after a few months. It was the timer problems and going back to the blue screen. Our retailer put it down to digital switch over and asked us to keep with it for a while. In the end in Nov 2011, we had to wait an hour for it to come on before we could record anything, we managed to get them to take it back for repair.

Got it back after 3 weeks. It had BD drive replaced/Digital PCB replaced and Firmware upgrade. Which for an expensive machine (it cost £550 seems totally wrong- and on the basis that it does not get a lot of use) Just this week we had the 'waiting' for it to come on problem again.

We have been informed by the recommended repairer that it has to go for repair 3 times before they will take any further action.

Any other experience out there?

I too have just started to have timer recording problems from the Guide. It have had this machine over a year and it has been very good - up until now.

Any ideas what I can do to try and resolve it. It records using timer record - but it is so much easier to record via the Guide.

Thanks

Whenever a Guide driven recording fails, note the channel involved.

Failure of such recordings can be due to failure of the broadcasters to send the appropriate recording trigger and may affect certain channels only.

There are so many concurrent changes going on in broadcasting that problems like this are cropping up often.

Such problems can also be caused by receiving from more than one transmitter, so it can pay to find out which transmissions are intended for you and to check you receive those channels... manually tuning them if necessary.

If any problems persist, report them to Panasonic Customer Services.
